Spooky yawn

Caught in a yawn, the cats are all in as my neighbours on both sides have both had bonfires. I’m rather annoyed. The closer neighbour had a very smoky, smelly fire, it’s meant the clothes on my line will need washing again. The one further down the road has a real blaze with black smoke billowing up from it at the moment.

I think they are burning an old tyre? I actually rang them up because there was nothing, then suddenly a whoosh of flame. I guess they poured some petrol on their fire? It frightened me and I was going to ring the fire brigade. I thought it was unattended but then I saw a shadowy figure through what’s left of my hedge after they hacked it back on their side!

So I’m stressed as I don’t want the cats to get hurt and the local hedgehogs may have been burnt 😢. Stay Safe X

Fit a battery

Create an emergency preparedness plan.

Our smoke alarm went off twice today. No smoke, no fire, no heat. I will buy a new battery. But it might be a spider has moved in and it’s feet have tickled the sensor? I think I read it can happen.

We have two more in the house and they are both working. So I feel safe and everything is ready for action.

The plan is

Wake up if the alarm goes off.

Wake hubby

Go downstairs if safe,

If not try and get out of the bedroom window.

The only problem

I’m too old to climb!

I don’t have a ladder.

So turn everything off at bedtime!

Have keys in the lock so I don’t have to find them!

Red sunsets due

I was watching the weather forecast and the smoke from the forest fires in Canada has risen in the atmosphere and had been carried by the jet stream up across the Atlantic and towards the UK. The smoke particles are not low enough to cause breathing problems, but they are in the right place to scatter the light more at sunrise and sunset. This should result in brighter red and orange skies in the morning and evenings.

A similar phenomenon happened when Krakatoa erupted in the 19th Century. Then the volcanic dust that was swept into the sky caused changes in the evening light and blue moons being reported. We have to realise how interconnected the world is.

Window

Old window, light pouring through. Old packing room at Middleport pottery. It’s now the cafe. How different it must have been. I presume that plates and pots would have been packed in straw or hay so they didn’t move about too much. It would have then been put in packing cases so that the pottery could be transported on barges. The packs would have been lifted onto the boats using an old wooden crane which sits on the side of the canal. The crane was hand cranked and used a set of gears, a ratchet and a band brake to slow down the boxes of pottery as they were lowered down into the holds of the barges. I’m imagining the packing room bustling with people as the orders went out.

One advantage of the canals was that larger amounts of ceramics could be transported safely, with less breakages than would have happened on a rutted and uneven road in the back of an old horse drawn cart. It also helped speed up deliveries.

The smoke around the potteries must have caused a dark and gloomy atmosphere as the people worked there. The sunlight would not have shone into the window as it did today and the glass was probably filthy with soot and clay. The air was poor and people suffered from breathing difficulties and illnesses. The mortality rate was very bad. Life was difficult and short. I would like to suggest the book ‘When I was a child :Growing up in the potteries in the 1840’s’ by Charles Shaw, which gives an idea of the reality of the time.

Rooves

Yesterday I drew an horizon. But this was a photo I took that I almost worked from. I liked the serried rows of house rooves and chimneys , but they are capped with tower blocks and modern concrete buildings up in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. I decided that it wasn’t what I wanted to draw. Slate rooves, old and grey, covered in lichens, no longer wrapped in the smoke of potteries and bottle ovens. Cleaner air, further views.

Blue horizon

Misty sea and sky, on the coast, this summer. I think we were staying in Wales, in Llandudno, before the fires across the world, before the yellow clouds of smoke obscured other peoples views. Before rainforest burnt in South America, or woods burning in Australia. People, animals, birds, need clean air to breathe, like the air at the coast. They need gentle breezes, or moderate winds, not storms that are getting faster, tornados that rip houses apart, hurricanes that drown landscapes, Tsunami and mega Cyclones. But we keep burning gas and electricity, chopping down forests.

The world’s scientists say we only have twelve years before we reach a tipping point where we won’t be able to stop global warming. Yesterday it was announced that Carbon Dioxide levels have risen again to something like 147% of what they were in pre industrial times. We knew about this in the 1970’s but no one did anything to resolve it….

Well this has got cheerful….

Forgotten?

Sandstone is a beautiful stone, soft and porous, it can be carved into fine shapes. But as this gravestone shows it also dissolves, especially in out acid rain environment. In this case the stone has turned black, probably from pollution, as Stoke-on-Trent was a very smoky place, due to the coal fired potteries. And yet the church is clean. I don’t know if it has been cleaned but it has had some restoration.

The lettering on the headstone is almost lost. Its almost as if a layer has peeled off. Gone but not forgotten? It depends on whether the family still exists, and whether they still live in the area.

Other stones in the graveyard are in worse or better condition. Some have been turned into steps, gradually wearing away under foot.
