Sunset (exposure)

Have you tried moving your camera when you take a photo of the sky? When the sun is rising or setting people generally take photos of the landscape in the direction of the setting sun. Much more dramatic than the other direction. But include too much sky and the light entering the camera can be too much causing over exposure. Include more land and less sky and the sunset colours emerge more clearly.

By including more land the cameras automatic exposure changes. The area in silhouette may even reveal more detail than if you aim more at the sky. Also remember, if you have a crop tool on your camera you can remove part of the landscape while leaving the sky.

The only difference in these two photos is that I moved between the first and the second and I included more land in the second one.

_20191205_114418looking at this photo turned on its side reminds me of an animal with external gills. With tentacles, with tiny eyes. It might be a landscape in reality, but it feels like something much more alien.

I imagine it floating above the land, syphoning up water from the surface of the sea. Eyes staring with disdain at a terrified population. Or perhaps visiting in friendship and hope.

When I was a child I helped with the washing up. I would spend ages stacking plates and cups and knives and forks into ancient or future landscapes. Maybe that’s why I do this to my photos?

Succulents

I love house leeks, a type of succulent that makes a rosette of leaves. They are often found growing on walls and sometimes even roofs. They are called succulents because their leaves are swollen with moisture, a bit like a cactus…. Some have weblike coverings, as if a spider had spun a web across the top of them. These plants look good on old fashioned rockeries. Stones and rocks with succulents peeping through the gaps.

This photo has been manipulated to duplicate the pattern. I like doing this and seeing what comes out of it….

Tickle? Or not……

FB_IMG_1572196814184

My cat does not like his belly rubbing or tickling even if he lies like this! Tickle his chin, that’s fine. Try and give him a belly rub, and the claws come out. He has to be extremely relaxed for me to dare to tickle him. I’ve got lots of scratches and puncture wounds in the months after we got him. Now I know him, I keep my hands away from those claws. I think it’s like fishing, he tempts you close, then – pounce, he’s got the back of your hand or a finger. Ouch!

Old pottery

I have a project for the weekend. Which of these should I paint? I wasn’t necessarily going to paint a bottle oven (these are at the Falcon works, with the Goss hawk at the end of the building). They are situated around the back of Portmeirion pottery. And I quite like the architecture. I might paint a negative image….

I have seen these buildings for years but didn’t investigate them much. I learned more about them and the owner today from a friend. Apparently the owner treated his work force very well and he even introduced a fire extinguishing system in the pottery to prevent fires.

Grr camera problems

I took a beautiful photo of a very strong, bright, double rainbow, when we were in Llangollen earlier today. It was the best rainbow I’ve ever seen. But my mobile phone is not working well. If I put something on Instagram it duplicates the photo. It also seems to duplicate other photos. I keep having to delete lots of photos (which I did this afternoon after missing the spectacular rainbow). The photos are Mb not Kb. I wish I knew how to change the file sizes. I will have to find out how.

Welsh mountains (2)

We drove out of Betws y Coed along the A5, up past Swallow Falls and on into the Ogwen Valley. Past the Ugliest House on the right hand side of the road. Out of the woods into mountains covered on scree and huge waterfalls. Past llyn Igwen then down into Bethesda. There are forests again and then you reach the main A55 again looking out over Anglesey and heading towards Llandudno. Its a large loop of north Wales that we had travelled. Such an enjoyable day.
