Gardening when I can

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

For years I have filled the back yard with hanging baskets and flowers. This year I had to get help from my sister to hang the baskets as I can’t climb ladders. Then I got plants from a wellness group I visit every week. Some of the plants were going over so I got them for a small amount of money.

I love this habit, but it has its dangers. I use a hose to water the plants as I can’t lift my watering can up. But it’s a trip hazard! I have to be very careful not to fall, luckily I have a grab handle by the back door. But sometimes things get very precarious!

Helped pay at the till

Write about a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone.

Whether someone is a few pence, or a couple of pounds short when they are shopping I don’t mind offering to help out.

Why not? They might be short on funds, or just unable to pay because of a computer problem. Maybe they chose the same as normal but prices have increased because of inflation? Let’s face it, life is getting harder for everyone.

I think what goes around comes around and the world needs a little more generosity. You have to be aware of problems though, I think I have to be sensible, but that shouldn’t stop me or anyone else using a random act of kindness to help others.

Short

How would you describe yourself to someone who can’t see you?

AI portrait by a friend…

It’s like me but not. My friend gave me glorious hair, a wry smile, intelligent eyes. I think I’ve been Vikingized!

In reality, I’m short fattish and hairy. Given to grumpy faces. My forehead is not wrinkled but I have a down turned mouth. And skin? I have enough blemishes such as moles, that I could qualify as a witch! I’d like to shrink further not vertically, but horizontally. My body let’s me down physically, shaking and twisting, uneven and unsteady.

But the outside doesn’t count, it’s what is in your mind that matters.

No tree

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

We always had a traditional Christmas tree, decorated with glass baubles, lammetta to look like icicles (thin strips of shiny metal tassels) also dodgy Christmas tree lights which would regularly stop working. It was a treat to be allowed to decorate it with my mother’s help. I think we always managed a tree with nicely placed ornaments and would then add bits of cotton wool to represent snow.

Scroll forward a few years. Now I rarely have a tree because of my cats. They like playing with the baubles and breaking them. They have also knocked the whole tree over. I haven’t given up on the idea. I even think I could hang a tree from the ceiling just to keep the cats at bay!

Grey hair, short and chubby

How would you describe yourself to someone?

I once read a Garfield the cat quote “I’m not overweight I’m undertall” . I think that precisely describes me. I also have greying hair, glasses and I’m a bit shaky.

If I was to meet you how would you describe me? By appearance or by personality? I hope you would find me pleasant and friendly. I think I’m interesting and have definite ideas about the world and how important it is to look after it. I’m not sure if you would like me, but that is your choice. I don’t judge a book by it’s cover and I hope you feel the same way.

Nowhere

If you won two free plane tickets, where would you go?

Never flown, never will. Too scared. I like insects, snakes, spiders, I don’t mind thunder and lightning.

I’m not so scared of flying I guess, just the prospect of crashing. Plus I have no control over the airplane. At least if I’m in a car, train or on a boat I could stop and get out, get off at a station, or jump overboard and swim if necessary.

But planes? No! So if I won two free plane tickets I would give them to someone who needed them, or to relatives so they could fly over and visit me. Or auction them off for charity? I don’t know.

I keep seeing adverts where you can win houses over a million pounds. But I won’t enter the draw. How would I keep a massive house warm? How to light it? How to clean it? I don’t have spare cash. Perhaps I could rent out rooms. But it’s a pipe dream. If I won I wouldn’t want it. I would give it to a charity possibly or sell it to someone else who wants it. I just need enough money to stay comfortable and manage to live on for the rest of my life. X

A proper seaside holiday

What are your future travel plans?

It doesn’t have to be hot

It doesn’t have to be sandy.

I’d like there to be a pier

That is still working this year.

Maybe a promenade

Brass band playing a tango

Or Waltzers spinning and twirling

Horses galloping on the Carousel.

That would suit me very well..

Gulls stealing chips

Waves rolling in

My head in a spin

From the loud wind blowing…

And of course a stick of rock

Peppermint flavoured

The resorts name written

right through it.

I would make compassion and empathy classes mandatory in schools.

What would you change about modern society?

Something needs to change. As the world gets more complicated, resources diminishing, people may be becoming more selfish?

But is that because we see so much more of the bad things going on in the world? It is only since film and TV and then the Internet that we have been able to see wars and conflicts in real time. We are not always sheltered by time or censorship of terrible events. Computers give us access to horrendous content that could change the way we think. But statistics show that in some countries crime has decreased considerably over the years.

As countries seem to be heading towards populist, right wing agendas, perhaps we should look at the ethics of news, bring in compassion and empathy. We could go back to religious rules, like turning the other cheek, enacting laws so that the weapons of war are not easily available, or working against theft and violence. But it doesn’t have to be a religious interpretation. Not all of those rules make sense. Why not work with humanitarian or humanist ethics? Listen to world courts and follow their precepts.

If compassion and empathy were taught in school we might not change the current situation but we could change our futures or our children’s futures.

Ice-cream

What’s your go-to comfort food?

Just lately I could have eaten ice-cream for breakfast, dinner and tea. That’s not good. It’s the only thing I feel comfortable eating!

I like pizza, lasagne, Thai green curry, masala, sushi, fish and chips, and lots of other things. But when it’s getting hot I like ice-cream, specifically the adult sort with lots of flavour combinations. Icelandic berries, peppermint and coffee, mango fizz, (not salted caramel).

I’m happy to just eat chocolate ice-cream as long as its not too sweet. I’d try different flavours. There is apparently an ice-cream parlor in London that sells odd ones, like piccalilli, vinegar, baked beans, coffee, jaffa cake. It sounds bizarre but they even have soy sauce flavour.

I’m thinking of going to the freezer now for a small tub of the stuff!

Cats

Dogs or cats?

Cats are very loving, except when they give you the cold shoulder! They are aloof but also demanding. They can be funny.

One advantage, you don’t have to take them for a walk, just install a catflap!

They can be cheeky, friendly, mad, crazy, and run about so fast they are like miniature cheetahs!

They like company, and will try and get your attention when you least expect it. Walking over your keyboard and flopping down just  as you get to that important clause in the contract you were writing.

By the way I still like dogs, but I’ve grown up with cats and I love them.
