Red sky in the morning

Shepherds warning?

The sky was on fire a few minutes ago. Such a bright red, as if the clouds were on fire. Now its faded to a pale orange. I know its just the reflection of the sun’s rays below the horizon hitting the base of a layer of clouds but it was spectacular.

I don’t think my phone gives it a true sense of how bright and gorgeous it was but it captured it better than my old one would have. I guess it must have a more sophisticated apature control. On my old phone the red would just have appeared over exposed.

Dawn

I just accidentally clicked on the new editor and didn’t understand it at all. My photos uploaded straight away but then I couldn’t work out how to add text? Has anyone else used it yet?

Anyway ..

Dawn,

Bright sky, blue moon, sharp stars.

Pink and yellow sparkle,

Flat blue and violet.

No clouds this morning,

Just smoke trails in the blue.

Azure hue, tinge of grey.

Twigs and branches scratch holes

Through into the night.

Fingers of dark pulling down the dark,

Dawn into Dusk.

Leaving leaves

IMG_20181122_184435_647

Leaves you have fallen,

Clawed the sky then slumped to the ground.

Wet, damp, cold, you shiver on pavements,

You crush together on grass,

Just a carpet of colour flavouring the world.

Only here in temperate lands, leaves fall each year.

North the evergreens take over, south the rainforest.

Here we abide in heat and cold. Sun and rain,

Leaves leave, love fades, life continues.

Peeling a palette

When I paint in acrylic I generally use either a plate or a plastic tub as a palette to mix my paints in. But eventually it gets too lumpy and I peel the paint (which is like soft plastic or coloured PVA ) off the palette so I can start again without getting caught on lumpy bits of paint or bits that haven’t dried and muddy new paint.

But, have you ever looked underneath? It’s like magic. Beautiful colours that have not blended together too much. Plus often the surface is silky smooth as it takes on the same shape as the plastic tub or ceramic plate.

Then I take a photo, sometimes I’ll clone or duplicate it and make a pattern……

Experimenting

cof

These are two small canvases that I worked on yesterday. I used a modelling medium on them to build up textures  One had leaf shapes built up on it, and the other a spiral of shallow spikes.

I also bought some brusho. I’d never used it before. It’s a dust or fine crystals that you can either sprinkle on a wet or damp surface or sprinkle on dry and then add water. The colours change when you add water. For instance lemon yellow looks orange in the pot. You also only need to use tiny amounts. I ended up with a paper plate under the canvases to catch the drops. I tried to get the colours to surround the raised sections then used some acrylic colours to delineate the edges of the shapes.

I’ve left them with Etruria Artists at the warehouse to dry out.

Afternoon sunshine

We came out of the cafe and the clouds had lifted in penkhull. The sun was shining and the breeze had dropped.

I saw a small plant with almost ivy shaped leaves and little white flowers with yellow centres. It reminded me of the woody nightshade we have growing in our garden.

I would have loved to take some seeds home but didn’t see any on the plant

I’m trying to grow as many interesting local plants in the garden to attract the bees. These were good because they are flowering right at the end of the summer.

I quite like asters and other autumn plants such as dahlias.

We did get some fluffy red valerian seeds. They make a bright display of colour in August onwards. They seem to grow out of cracks in the pavement. Much nicer looking than some other weeds or garden escapees.

Patterns

Oh I love pattern and colour,

I love birds, flowers and trees,

Green men, phoenix, mythical beasts.

Who wants bland and boring?

Who wants pale and wan?

Why not get those colours

Under your skin.

Life is so exciting.

Life can be such fun.

If only we embrace it

Under the sun.

Never give me plain things

Always give me jazz

Living in a coloured land

Magic has begun.
