In the dark (part three)

I had walked into my bedroom and seen the shadowy figure of my partner sitting in a chair by the window. I tried to see his face but the full moon in the window behind him cast darkness across his face.

“What’s up with the lights?” I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.

“I took out the bulbs” he replied..

That was something I had not thought of. “Why?”

“I need the dark” was all he would say.

I felt the chill air seeping into my body, something was wrong with the heating, it had been playing up before I went out to choir practice. Now it was as cold inside as it had been out in the night.

“It’s cold” I said simply. “Do you want a coffee?”

“No”

I was getting worried and scared, Henri was usually a happy, talkative man. His manner now was just not like him.

“I’m going downstairs” I said,

“No” again..

“Well this is stupid” I started to edge towards the door.

Then he opened his eyes….they were glowing gold….

I ran. Down the stairs, tripping and falling but catching the bannister I managed to halt myself. I felt a bone crack in one of my fingers, but I found I felt no pain, I just wanted to get out. Get back in the car, get away……

(To be continued…..?)

We have snow

But don’t get excited! It’s wet and about an inch deep. But something we were going to tonight has been cancelled because of it.

Meanwhile over in Europe this week the snow fell so heavily that roofs have collapsed and people have been killed in avalanches.

Britain is situated in the Atlantic ocean in the gulf stream. We only rarely have a lot of snow so we are a bit out of practice with it. No one puts snow chains on car tyres, we don’t possess snow shoes, and the only time skis are worn is when people go up to the (mainly) Scottish mountains in the middle of winter.

Anyway an inch of snow is the most we have had so far this year. If it’s pretty in the morning I will take better photos.

Yellow sky.

I was looking out of the window and the sky was so yellow I knew it was going to snow. I don’t know why I know that but there is a certain tinge it takes on when the snow is coming.

I looked out later and indeed big white flakes of feathery snow were falling, mixed in with a cold rain.

The cats are curled up and warm and I’ve got an extra heater on and I’m sitting here with my hot water bottle (for my bad back). I’m huddling, watching the sleet and wondering if I should go out shopping. Life goes on.

Painting on black boards.

These are two more boards that I’m painting for the Penkhull panto. This time I have black boards to paint on and it’s taking a lot of paint! I think the acrylic paints I used are a bit too thin. The colour seems to sink in, not float on the surface so that they won’t show up as well on the stage. I’m going to get some stronger paint for next week with more pigment and less filler in them.

These two took a while to paint and it was very cold in the hall. I’m ready for some warm food and a rest.

Cold inside

“Brrrr it is getting cold in here” she said. “Put the little oil heater on”. ‘yeah, ok’…

“I’ll have to put my jumper on”…

Half an hour later, “that heater isn’t doing much, and you have had the oven on to bake a loaf. Is the central heating working?” ‘ow yes, the radiator is hot…..’ “so why is it so cold in here?” ‘I don’t know?!’

Half an hour later. ‘I’m just going to water the plants upstairs’…

‘er I think I know why it’s cold….?’

“why?”

‘I left the window open’

‘I’ve shut it now’

🤦‍♂️ Face-palm.

Headache

FB_IMG_1546128347939I’ve been woken after two hours sleep by a headache. My shoulders are also aching and my nose feels stuffed up. I thought I was doing remarkably well to avoid the festive lurgy that lurks at this time of year, but maybe not.

Two paracetamol and a cup of warm decaff coffee is all I can take to ward off this possible cold. I won’t say it’s worse than that because I don’t know yet… .

If I start snuffling or sneezing or even coughing I shall know then….

Going back to sleep. Night all.

Winter Solstice

sketch-1545423093478.pngDark continues to increase during the winter until two thirds of the way through December.

Today is the shortest day, the 21st this year. The least sunlight, the cold drifts in under the doors. Subtle shades of black cover the sky. The dawn seems a long way away. Lights twinkle through chilled air and a steady drizzle drives into every crevice, making clothes damp and uncomfortable.

That dark is such a contrast to 6 months ago when the temperature soared to over 30 degrees and the sun had barely set before it sprang back up again. Bathing in heat then, we now sit in yellowed gloom from cheap low energy light bulbs. Colours are washed out, paint seems hard to differentiate from colour to colour.

Is it any wonder that northern lands cling to the classic religions that celebrate their most important ceremonies at this time of year.

Wassail and messiahs meld into a grand charge against the darkness. Dragging us forward into the new year and the return of the Sun.

Freezing rain

The mild balmy weather which is so unseasonal for this time of year now seems to have disappeared. The cats are curled up over the radiator on their cat tower. The central heating is now on full time. The weather forecast is for freezing rain and possibly later on snow. I’m lucky not to be shivering outside in this bad weather. People are living outside in this, finding shelter in doorways and under  sheets of plastic or in tiny cheap tents.

Why is this? Our country has a policy called Austerity. Money has been cut from benefits for everyone. Whether you work or not incomes have reduced since the world crash of 2008 and are only recently starting to increase again. Austerity is said to be over but I can’t see that happening soon.

Now we have the follies of Brexit. Enough said. Government is distracted by this stupid policy and in the meantime people can go to hell in a handbasket.

Will no one listen to the poor, the huddled masses? Not if you live in some of the richest countries in the world, and certainly not if you live in poorer countries.

Democracy, a way of governing by committees and voting. Except it doesn’t always work. I do not think we should be anarchists, but we should try and fix democracy.

Fun fact: 80 men have as much money as half the world’s population that’s

80 : 3,600,000,000 (approx).

So, its freezing rain out there. I’m keeping snug. But who can say what will happen to any of us in future?
