Wide eyed

I was trying to draw a face that had a child like quality as an example for the children’s book project I’m doing for college. I used black ink fine liner pen to draw and shade it and add some freckles. I was worriedcthe shading was a bit to strong so I decided to use a charcoal pencil to add a bit of softness. Then I coloured the eyes and the lips (I’m planning to use black and white drawings with small coloured highlights). Each drawing is different but it’s helping me decide what I’m doing.

1950’s style?

A pattern I drew (top) and the same digitally textured with photodirector (bottom). I’m not sure what pattern I would call it, but it looks a bit like boats with sails and a setting sun. I could try and colour the lower curves blue, the ‘sails’ red and the sun (blob) yellow, or try different colourways. Maybe swap the red and yellow over? Whatever the colour I just like the play with pattern.

Drawing bubbles

Drawing a simple pattern, a series of circles. Somehow this is relaxing, a meditation and concentration. I might cover the whole page with this.

It was based on watching a tap drip into a bowl of water that had a small amount of detergent in. The drips created tiny bubbles that gradually built up into a single layer.

I could try adding ripples on the water surface. But I’m not sure I want to. I will try and think about it.

Digital Marilyn

A digital drawing I did of Marilyn Munroe a few years ago. It was very hard to get her features right. I’m not sure what film the image was taken from but it might have been ‘some like it hot’ which also starred Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

The story is that they are escaping gangsters and escape by dressing as women and joining a woman’s Jazz band. Marilyn is the singer of the band. If you ever want to cheer yourself up I would recommend the film.

Verticals and horizontals

That was what today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was. I have three large bookcases in our living room so I drew an interpretation of them. I couldn’t see all the titles let alone draw them all. I also added cat. It’s a bit scribbly and decided to leave the drawing as black and white although I am tempted to colour it.

Inktober 2018

Three years ago I was drawing pictures for Inktober. I did do drawings for the whole month. I must have visited my sister and drawn my impression of driving in the dark. That’s something I hate, people driving behind you with their headlights full on. (the two white dots on the drivers mirror) this was from my memory.

Since I’ve been doing an illustration course I have amassed a large collection of drawings and sketches. So many memories. Even during lockdown, I have recorded images. I’m not sure where to store them all!

A creature?

Twisting the pattern I drew as a doodle seems to create a strange creature reflected in a mirrored surface. There could be other alien creatures lurking in there. I enjoyed doing this. I had some fun with it. I could make three more versions, choosing different corners to match up in the middle. I think this is my favourite.
