Mural of Burslem Riot

This is my mural that I painted to commemorate the Burslem Riot in the Leopard Hotel in Burslem.

On 16th August 1842 Chartists from Stoke on Trent and Leek met to fight for their rights to form unions in Burslem town. The police and army were called out and were based at the Leopard Hotel in Burslem with rioters gathered in the street outside in front of Josiah Wedgwoods Big House. The riot act was read in front of up to 4 to 5 thousand rioters. Josiah Heapy, one of the protestor was shot in the head and died instantly. Many of the rioters were also beaten and injured.

You can read a lengthy article in Wikipedia entitled the Potteries riots of 1842 which is very interesting. I really enjoyed painting this in about 2007. Just sad the hotel burnt down in 2022 .

This would have been 17 years old if the Leopard Hotel in Burslem hadn’t burnt down two and a half years ago. I don’t seem to have had much luck with murals. At least three were in buildings that were later knocked down. The risk of being a mural artist I guess is that if they are painted in old buildings they might not outlast you!

Medicine

What profession do you admire most and why?

I admire the skills and knowledge you need to practice medicine. That’s not just doctors and nurses, but radiographers, sonographers, physiotherapists, psychologists, occupational health, and not only those that deal with human health, but veterinary experts and their skills and knowledge that is essential to the care of so many animals. Without these skilled people how would many of us would survive? We would be plunged back into the pre industrial ages or further back in time perhaps to the dark ages, where scam remedies and quackery might take over.

Having knowledge of basic first aid is a good thing too. You never know you might save someone!

Close Encounters

In 1977 a Sci fi film by Steven Spielberg came out that I have always loved. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I remember queuing around the block to get into the cinema. The story is of an alien encounter. The characters are all drawn to a place called Devils Tower in Wyoming USA.

It was made with cutting edge special effects. We go on a roller coaster adventure and complex plot line. The story was also written by Spielberg. It’s exciting and fascinating. I don’t believe in Aliens visiting Earth, but I love the story. I’ve watched it several times and Richard Dreyfuss as Roy Neery is the perfect odd ball hero.

The best thing? I’ve just watched it again for probably the 10th time. It cheers me up to see it again.

If you were going to open up a shop, what would you sell?

I’ve accumulated a lot of physical and digital art over a lifetime of being an artist. A lot of it is still in my house. I would set up a shop to clear some of it so it could go to good homes. I’m sure friends would do the same.

I realise people like to be clutter free, and now AI is creeping in they could press a few buttons and make something. But wouldn’t it be nice to have a creation made by a human that suits your taste and is created with love and attention? Go on, give an artist a try.

What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?

I can do without my phone, but I need to get into my house, my car, my shed, my garden gate.

I’ve only ever been locked out a couple of times, the first when I was a child, in that case it was my mum that had slammed the front door shut (it had a yale lock), only to remember she had left the keys inside. I was fairly small and a bit of an athlete so I ended up climbing in through the downstairs toilet window. I managed to let us all in.

The other time I was sharing a house, I left my keys somewhere else and only realised when I was outside the front door. That ended with me sitting on the front doorstep for a couple of hours.

Now I’ve told you I’ve probably jinxed myself to do it again. Luckily I have the number of a locksmith on my phone (which I don’t always keep with me!)

Today is Staffordshire Oatcake day. According to Google:

“Oatcake Day is celebrated annually on August 8th to honor Staffordshire and its famous oatcake. The day began in 2010. Some people celebrate by visiting Staffordshire Oatcakes in Hanley to learn how the Potteries staple is made. Others share their oatcake creations on social media using the hashtag #StaffordshireDay.”

Basically the Staffordshire Oatcake is a thin pancake style flat tasty disk made of oatmeal flour, yeast, water and possibly other ingredients. It is cooked on a hot griddle in a thin layer so it ends up looking a bit like a lace doily but with fewer holes. You can buy a dozen or half a dozen to take home, or if you get them from an oatcake shop you can have them with various toppings. Mostly cheese and bacon, or bacon and mushroom. My favourite is sausage, cheese and tinned tomatoes. Sometimes with a bit of brown sauce. You can also eat them hot with butter and jam, but that’s probably not acceptable behaviour! And rolled or folded? That’s your choice!

Definitely a Staffordshire specialty. Not to be confused with Scottish oatcakes which are smaller and thicker.

Esther Chilton prompt “future”

We were asked to write to the prompt future and as I don’t have a crystal ball I decided to look back at what our future selves might remember.

“In future when people look back at the first quarter of the twenty first century what will be remembered? A first black American president, increasing global temperatures? Will the remember the global financial crash with Lehmann brothers? Bird flu and Sars then a global pandemic of Covid 19. Massive forest fires, huge hurricanes, tremendous tornados? The deaths of famous people including Queen Elizabeth the Second. Madness of global leaders? Ukraine, Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, so many wars.
Will our future selves see a disintegrated world, a dystopia bought on by the lack of interest in pollution or global warming. Big business using its powers to continue to push oil and gas and plastic use? Will our seas fill with more pollution or the pollenating insects die off so crops fail.
Will they see this part of the century as depressing, or will we take the future into our hands and pass on a cleaner and greener future to our children and their descendants?”

What’s the most money you’ve ever spent on a meal? Was it worth it?

I went to a Chinese restaurant recently in my home town. We spent a little more than usual. Possibly double the cost than I usually pay? I don’t go out very often anymore unless it’s for a coffee or tea. It was a real treat and gave me a chance of using chopsticks for a change.

The food came in a few courses, starter, then soup, various main selections with rice, then a tasty dessert. Unfortunately I can’t remember the names of the various dishes. But they were all well presented, colourful, and well spiced. It was definitely worth it. I don’t have any photos of the food. It was too nice to waste time on taking pictures.

Looking up, not at a roof, but at the sky. I’d forgotten it was there. The privet tree and hedge are missing, and I feel their loss, but if I want to look up for meteors or to try and see aurora I can do it now. And you can’t take the garden off me. That garden where I’ve seen hedgehogs and squirrels. I will try and get the rest of the garden (the bit I never show you because it’s overgrown) a bit tidier and let more light in (enough) to grow roses and honeysuckle. Xxx
