Through the trees there is light,

Through the trees there is air,

Through the trees there is water

but without the trees there is no life

no birds, no animals

no bears, no deer,

Without trees the air gets dirty

It gets dry.

Forests and jungles are our lungs,

life evolved in the sea,

came onto the land,

And in the forests of the land

there are more bugs, animals and possibly birds

than are found in the long grass

or desert plains

or high hills and mountains.

Save the forests, save the trees, save the world ..

Cats play

Our female cat loves playing in the bath, chasing drips or drinking water out of the tap. She can be really silly and pounce on anything, including my feet! She doesn’t seem to mind if water drips on her head.

Both my cats love chasing each other. I’ve seen them hiding down behind a shoe then a swift pounce and they are off chasing. They also stand on their back legs and sort of box with each other. Sometimes they start washing each other then one decides it’s all too much and it results in a squabble.

But I would not be without them. I’m sure my blood pressure has improved since we got them.

Patterns

Patterns, that’s what I like, I make them out of trees, out of skies out of water.

Nature makes it easy to create something interesting and different each time. Sometimes you can see faces and animals in the patterns.

Each time I take a photo I think how it would appear if I turned it into a pattern. Some pictures are easier than others, photos with a lot of strong diagonals, or lots of sky and just a small corner with the side of a building in it can also be interesting.

The pictures I took today have strong contrasts because of the bright low sun. The light delinated the branches and made them stand out.

Most of the time I turn each picture four times, but I don’t have to stick to that format. For instance the third picture in this series is slightly different, see if you can see why.

I can never remember, it has large, pale blue feet paddling below the surface. It’s smart black body is decorated bu a white crest and beak. Swimming through the cold grey blue water of the lake. Luckily they sell duck food but all the birds are hungry at this time of year.

Paddling along, looking for food, trying to survive the winter.

Bubbles

I fill a large plastic bottle of water from the tap to water my houseplants. It had the advantage that I can reach some of the pots that are a bit out of reach for me.

This morning I saw all these tiny bubbles in the water. Air must have been dissolved in the water and had condensed on slightly rougher places on the surface of the plastic.

The blues and greens are from the tiles and paintwork in the kitchen. The shape of the bottle, with its swirling curves, adds to the interest. The bottle also acted as a lens and I like the contrast in the focus, making the bubbles in and out of focus.

Canada geese

img_20190106_004721 I’ve seen a lot of Canada Geese on the lake this weekend. They fly to Britain to overwinter where they can rest and survive over the winter .

I think they are smart looking birds with their black, white and brown markings.

They are certainly pushy when it comes to feeding them. When I was feeding the ducks yesterday the Canada Geese grabbed a fair share of the food. They are certainly bold!

I love the way you can go for a walk and see lots of birds at the lake. We saw small birds as well, Robins, a blackbird and a couple of wrens. Not close enough to get photos, but still close enough to see them.

Paint bubbles

1545514334425 Its not something I’ve seen before but the new paintwork in our kitchen bathroom extention has started to bubble where it is painted in gloss..

When we tried pushing one of the bubbles it burst and water ran out. I don’t know where its come from. We had some problems when the work was done, but I thought it might be coming down from the roof? It’s not urgent but worrying that it’s happened at Christmas. It’s going to possibly have to wait for the new year to be fixed.

Twisted photos

I’m at it again, can’t resist. Loving autumn colours, and autumn mist.

Spent the day shooting, not animals but flowers, its easy to play around in floral bowers.

The lakes a stunner, full of ducks and drakes, and the gardens cafe makes lovely cakes.

Swans are skulling slowly across the water, seeing them is awesome, they don’t falter.

So now it’s autumn, colds and chills await, winter is a coming, and the flowers fate.

Coming to the garden, death will take a ride, and the pretty flowers will have nowhere to hide.

So come and see the garden, come see the show. Before the autumn’s over, and it’s too cold to grow.

Yes then all will be compost, thrown away my dear, and we will have to wait again, at least till next year!

Time and tide wait for no man

Why tide?

The Moon pulls on the Earth and the Earth pulls on the Moon. They are gravitationally linked so that one face of the Moon always faces us and the water in our oceans is attracted upwards towards it by its gravity. On the other side of the world there is also a rise in the waters because there is less gravitational pull on the oceans because they are futher away from the moon…..

Why high tides?

The water is pulled up so far by the moon, but as water flows inwards towards the land as the tide comes in it can also rise further if it is pushing into a narrowing area such as a gap between two islands or into the narrowing channel of a river or stream. In this case sometimes the water can overtop the banks if it is a particularly high tide, such as a spring tide. The water will rise higher if it is forced into the estuary by wind as well as tidal forces.

One third of the world’s population live on various coast lines around the world. If the world continues to warm up then these people will be at risk from the rising tides caused by global warming. Many countries have built costal defenses but these are being damaged every year during stormy weather. Replacing the damaged protective barriers is being abandoned in some places as not cost effective and some costal salt marshes are being recreated to protect the land.

Wet

Wet, rain, pouring, chucking it down, tipping down, soaking….

That’s what its like today, our canvas covered gazebo is literally on its last legs, the water on the top is making the sides bow. My partner has used a broom to empty it off but I think he will have to do it again soon.

Yesterday’s storm winds have dropped but the rain is torrential. I was coming back in the car from an appointment earlier and a storm drain lid was pushed up in the middle of the road and water was fountaining out of it!

I’m in the warm now but I got soaked. Sopping wet as they say… we are lucky to get rain in this country but the weather comes from all directions, we had a very hot dry summer, but I’m not sure what farmers will think of this. It might spoil their crops.

I was up at our village hall earlier and you could hear the rain drumming on the roof in places. Here you can hear the water overflowing the guttering and loudly falling outside the front door, or dripping and splashing off the window ledges. Hurrying traffic is sloshing water up from the road surfaces, lights shining through the curtains of rain. People rush past, umbrellas tipped to fend off the water. Darkness increases as the clouds lower overhead.

I’m off to make myself a warm drink.
