Wishes

DSC_1163

Oh wish tree, oh wish tree.

What can you do for me?

Can you turn the world around?

Can you make my life more sound?

Wish tree, wish tree

Make the world more clean and free,

Give the poorest food to eat,

Take away all cruelty.

Cool the worlds excessive heat.

Make compassion mandatory.

Ask the rich to balance out

The split between them and the poor

Make them pay a small amount,

Wish tree let them pay some more,

To make reducing poverty count.

That is all I really want.

Wish tree let my wishes free,

Give a chance for you and me.

Chemicals

IMG_20200210_185247_170

Something I wrote a couple of years ago on Facebook :

I keep seeing posts, don’t use this, don’t eat that, they are full of toxic, carcinogenic, genetically modified ingredients. BUT does anyone ever question where this information comes from? There does not seem to be scrutiny of whether things are FACT or FICTION.
Firstly everything is made of chemicals..because they are made of atoms or molecules of various elements. Even the wind is made if chemicals, because it is in fact gases like Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide and other elements. The only thing that us not chemical is energy, like light (photons) and energy on the electromagnetic spectrum.
So when someone writes there are chemicals in something that is FACT.
Some are harmful and some are good, it can depend on the amount of something in it. That seems to be where the problem lies. Especially where people believe in homeopathic remedies, where the original active ingredient is so diffuse it sometimes can not be measured any more but people still believe in its effectivness (the placebo effect).
There seems to be an idea that even trace amounts of chemicals can do harm, in some cases that is true, we have all seen films where terrorists plan to put nerve agents in water supplies, and they show a tiny phial of stuff and say this thing can kill a million people. But it is not true that all things in trace amounts can be harmful. It’s these scare stories that worry me. I love science and finding out things. I am not an expert, so I tend to ask people who know or look up things on Wikipedia or Snopes to see what the facts are.
I think we should all question things, but try and follow the facts, not being scared to seek the truth. Certain newspapers will say something is poisonous one day, and then say it is a cure for everything the next. Sometimes you can’t take things at face value.
Science is important, without it we would be back in the stone age.

Have I told you we are doing a panto?

FB_IMG_1581180016699

So what is a pantomime. Its a crazy comedy with characters that have been portrayed on stage for years. Some panto(mime) characters include :

Aladdin, The Genie of the lamp and the genie of the ring, Princess Jasmine, Abanazar, widow Twankey and the Sultan and Sultana in our panto.

Jack in Jack and the beanstalk, the giant, Jack’s mother and the panto cow, usually called Daisy.

Robin Hood and his merry men with Robin, Marion, the sheriff of Nottingham, Sir Guy, King John, little John, friar tuck, Will Scarlet.

Sleeping beauty and Cinderella are also pantomimes. So basically they are fairy stories or children’s stories that have been adapted for the stage. Various other characters are added. Like the principle boy, who plays the hero but is often played by a girl, or the ugly sisters and widow Twankey who are played by men. A lot of cross dressing in the panto is traditional.

Pantos are played for laughs, modern ones can be quite commercial and include product placement. In our case we are amateur and just have fun.

If you live nearby to Stoke and want to come along let me know.

Cold

_20200210_123927

Oh its a bit cold today. There is sleet falling and its very grey overhead. I’m sitting shivering a bit, I have to pay my fuel bills soon and I’m trying to minimise how much I use. So the heating is on a timer and I’m wearing a cardigan to keep warm. The temperature inside is about 17°C (outside its about 5°C). But it’s been another mild winter. It’s only been frosty a few times and we’ve had no lying snow. I’ve got things to do so I can leave the heating off till later. When I was younger I wasn’t bothered by the cold. I lived in house with no central heating, and we just had single glazing. So I’m a lot better off than I used to be.

I do think about the majority of the people on the planet who are not as lucky as me. It’s a sad situation where a few billionaires can have as much money as half the earth’s population. In the meantime my hubby just turned a light on, but left one on in the kitchen…. Bah humbug!

Life

_20200203_013919

Life is never simple. No matter how hard you try, something will come along and put a spanner in the works, whether it’s ill health, finances, or just bad weather.

If I had money I know I would share it. I would not want to keep it to myself. If I was healthier I would be able to help people more and get fitter. If I had the money I might move into a slightly bigger house, but only enough to fit in more books and paintings.

But it’s just wishes. I doubt that life will change that much. My biggest wish is for health for my relatives and friends. That is my strongest thought. Wishing you all the best.

Storm Ciara

I’m not going out so no exciting photos…. Its been blowing a gale and raining all last night and today although it seems to have calmed down a bit now. Winds over the north of Wales measured at 94 miles an hour. Flooding in Pateley Bridge in Yorkshire. Trees down, roads flooded. The main road round here is flooded to a depth of three or four feet with cars trapped in the water. The windspeeds over the whole of the UK have topped 80 miles an hour.

There are heavy seas around the coast with reports from Blackpool, Aberystwyth and Dover. Ferries have been cancelled and people who went to an international rugby game in Dublin are now stuck there. The jet stream across the Atlantic is very strong and fast at the moment and planes travelling from America to the UK have had their travelling time cut by about an hour. The fastest plane made the journey in just over four hours, with an air speed about 800 miles an hour. That made it the fastest sub sonic crossing of the Atlantic ever made!

The weather here is set to get colder. Oh what joy.

Quiet day

_20200207_140841_optimized

Today I have done a bit of work around the house, but apart from that I’ve had a quiet day. The weather is cold and windy, I have heard there is a major storm coming in off the Atlantic so I don’t think I will be doing much outside tomorrow. I feel like one of these birds in the tree. Perched up there, trying to huddle and keep warm…..

Westport today

A cold sunny day until the breeze blew clouds across the landscape. Ducks, geese, pigeons, moorhens and swans looking out for food, so we got two bags full to grain to feed them. I thought we would just go round the small lake which is a quarter of a mile, but instead we did the mile walk round the large lake. We’ll it was more of a slow dawdle. My hip is not right yet after pulling a muscle, but we did extend the walk into the maze that Staffordshire wildlife Trust have made on the area of hedging at the far end of the lake. The paths were muddy and difficult to get out of when we tried to regain the main path.

When the sun went behind the clouds it made a fantastic and dramatic picture. I took numerous pictures of the birds and trees and landscape around the lake. I feel much better for the walk, though I was very chilly when we finished. I need to be able to walk much further than this, but it’s a start.
