Whiskers

Whiskers, white and pointed, scientific name Vibrassae they pick up on vibrations in the air, see Wikipedia :

This vibration gives whiskers their scientific name, vibrissae, from the Latin word vibrio, meaning “to vibrate.” Detecting subtle changes in air currents, cat whiskers transmit information about the size, shape, and speed of nearby objects, which helps cats navigate the world.

They are also used to express the cats emotions. When I try and stroke my cars cheek the whiskers pull backwards. When they are interested or annoyed the whiskers come forward, especially when sniffing something. And they are supposed to stick out sideways to measure the size of a gap they can get through (although cats are thinner than they look, you can see that when they get very wet!). And don’t forget the whiskers above their eyes too..

Stolen cat photo

Saw this and had to share!

My favourite image is on the top right. It’s a bit hazy but I just love the face! I do wonder if the artists had actually looked at cats or just had them described to them?

Four legs, long tail, almond shaped eyes, pointed ears, sort of triangular face, nose sticks out a bit but not long snout. Sharp teeth and claws. Fur in oranges whites or black and browns or combinations or single versions of these. Don’t forget they have whiskers, and of course needle sharp teeth!

Make your own image out of that. Don’t forget size, about the size of a small dog but Maine Coone cats are much bigger!

Whiskers

Sitting at my feet, staring up, whiskers showing me how keen he is for me to feed him! He looks thin in this photo, but he’s a really big but soft cat. His nose was scratched by another cat outside because he’s not a fighter. He does let other cats bully him. His nose is healed up now. But I keep an eye on him because sometimes he will get a bit battered. Now he’s walking past me and purring. He wants breakfast…

Cat in the garden

Golden eyes staring up at me. Sitting in the sunlight. Is that love or ‘feed me’ in his eyes? Predator, but well fed. He doesn’t chase birds thankfully. But he does chase other cats, and gets chased in return. I think they are playing ‘tag’. Long whiskers twitch, he’s ready to rub up against my legs. Enjoy the sun and warmth today. Tomorrow maybe snow is on the way!

Claws and whiskers

Reaching, stretching, paws up, claws out. But he’s only saying hello.

Just look at those whiskers, able to twitch and feel. Helps with moving around in the dark. Used to check a space is wide enough to get through. Pushed forward when he’s interested in something, sniffing and smelling his food or a cat nip toy.

Claws ready to knead and pull, to show he loves you by ‘poddling’. A happy cat….

Sleeping Cat

DSC_2478

The cat is sleeping next to me on the chair arm. He’s curled up, warm and snug. Now he’s got a paw over his nose, keeping the light out. Soon his tail and legs will be twitching as he falls into a dream, chasing toy mice or licking cream from his bowl.

His ears are moving around, as if hearing his sister coming running up to him. They often chase each other around the room or up and down the stairs. She comes up and pounces on him, he tries to catch her…

Deep breathing, whiskers are twitching, he’s so settled. It’s mesmerising, watching him sleep….

Can I sharpen my claws

Can I sharpen my claws?

Is it OK to scratch?

You don’t mind my paws

Do you?

Can I sit on the fridge

Watch you take the milk out

Is that cheese you are eating

Can I have just a bit?

Can I lick your face clean?

Are you loving my nose?

I am ready to preen

My whiskers and toes.

Do you think I am fat?

Do you love my long tail?

Can I sit on your hat?

After all I’m all cat. ..
