Favourite chair

Favourite chair in the garden, but gradually getting submerged into the garden….I’ve got a bit of concern because although these are really comfortable one has a slightly broken arm and the other one is a bit rusty in laces. I guess they will need oiling before the autumn rains set in.

This prompt was from the Band of sketchers group I’m in. I decided to add colour to the picture after drawing with black ink. It meant that I could add to the shadows and increase the contrast. I used some purple to intensify the shadow as my green permanent markers are drying up and I don’t have anything darker than a mid green/turquoise.

The shape of the chair is picked up with the angle of the branches beyond it. The branches curve up to where the pears hang down from the branches. They are still green but I added yellow and orange to make them show up better. The flowers at the bottom are mid purple Geraniums but again I didn’t have the right colour.

I’m pleased with the drawing. I might try something different soon though. I seem to be stuck in one style……

Rest

My friends blue chair, its so comfortable. I had one like this, but mine had woodworm. I treated it then wondered what to do. One of the legs was worst effected so I got two thick metal knitting needles and pushed them up into the leg where it had broken. Then I got some electric flex and wound it up and down the leg until I had covered the missing section. The cable fitted in quite well with the woven split cane that covered the rest of it. A second treatment of woodworm killer, then I painted it bright red. Like my friends chair it was extremely comfortable. That Christmas I was short of money so I gave it my sister who had recently moved out of home. As far as I know she still has it thirty years later.

Sleeping cat

DSC_1980

When I got up this morning one of my cats was sleeping on my chair. I stood and watched him for ten minutes till he woke up. He saw me standing there and gave me a look as if to say “no chance” so I went back to bed for an hour! Cats have such a personality for small animals. I find myself constantly talking a sort of baby talk to them! Making up different names and stringing together noises they might like. In fact I begin to think they are alien invaders who have us in their thrall. Until of course I get fed up and pick him up and move him!

Chairs

sketch-1557095124218As a candidate at the recent local elections count I was surprised by the lack of seating for candidates, counting agents and guests inside the sports hall being used for counting the vote.

The staff counting the votes were all supplied with a seat but members of the public were not.

After being on my feet visiting houses for most of the day from early morning onwards, and particularly because I am no longer as fit and healthy as I used to be, I felt the lack of chairs or other seating was at the least an oversight, and to be honest pretty unfair. People ended up sitting on the floor  but not everyone can do that.

I managed to grab a chair early on during the count but was not able to use it through the whole evening. I shared it with others who were equally exhausted because of the work they had done over the day.

I think the local council should have taken into account the age and fitness of the candidates and their supporters. There were some quite elderly people there. People who stand for local elections are representative of the whole community. There has to be some level of fitness but standing up for 7 or 8 hours for the count is surely not feasible.

Abandoned chair

I took this photo last year. A chair left on a little triangle of a traffic island near the local police station.

Cars were rushing past, oblivious of the empty chair. I wondered what it had been used for? Sitting, standing on to reach cupboards or an electric meter, decorating or painting the ceiling?

It looked fine so why abandon it? Had its ex owner got a new table and chairs or just disposed if this because it didn’t fit in with their new colour scheme regardless of whether it was still useful.

Maybe there needs to be a royal society for the prevention of cruelty to chairs?

Just saying.
