When the sun sets

DSC_0387

The sun was setting and the sky turned pink at spode today. I looked up and saw the moon. A tiny bit bigger than half moon and I realised that you could work out where the sun was setting. Basically imagine you were shining a torch on a ball. If the torch was directly to the side if the ball the ball would be exactly half light and πŸŒ— half darkΒ  Now if the torch was lower but shining directly on the ball it would be half light and half dark but tipped at an angle depending how low below the horizon the torch (or β˜€ sun) was. Now imagine if the torch was level but was shining slightly to the side of the moon nearest us? Then the line between light and dark would shift and curve. The line shifts every night till full moon, then as it passes full moon the shadow starts to get cast on the other side. This leads to the understanding that when we get an eclipse the Earth gets directly between the Moon and the Sun… . Oh I know all of this is simple, but I’d never actually thought it out for myself……

P.S. now 5 hours later the angle of the moon is tipped up so that the curve is on a slant … so the sun is clearly lower down and the moon has moved. .but it also shows the world is rotating too…

Spode floors

If you want an abstract image you don’t need to go far in spode studios. Just look down at the floor. The yellow stripes and turquoise patches make a fine design. I don’t know what the building was like before they put studios in on either side of the corridor but perhaps the blue green areas were where machines were sited.

I took a couple of pictures today but couldn’t help getting my foot in one….

I think if I painted these they would have to have a thick varnish so that they have that sheen that the floors have. So many ideas that I can think of, I love the way there are views and images at the old spode site that evoke the history of the place.

Here are two more photos. This time pictures out of the windows of of the studios.

At stoking curiosity

DSC_0381

Wow there’s a lot of things going on down at Spode today. The Stoking Curiosity event is very busy. I’m down at studio 21 and hoping people will pop in. There’s just been a call for a poetry workshop (I’m having lunch at the works canteen cafe) then will be back to continue painting Jupiter today and tomorrow.

So if you get the chance come down and see what’s going on today and tomorrow

Play time

FB_IMG_1540256409804

Last year we went to see a play set in the Spode Factory site, it was called Dirty Laundry and was written by one of the actresses from Coronation street. Apologies as I have forgotten her name cat the moment. The story was about the complexities of life in the potteries in the mid twentieth century. It was thought-provoking.

The car in the photo was used to give the play a genuine feel.

Now a new play called Hot Lane, by the same author, is coming to Spode again in November. I’m looking forward to it. It is wonderful to see creativity continuing to return to the Potteries.

Blue sky

Sunshine and showers

Blue sky and dark clouds,

Caged land hidden behind fences?

History gone, wiped away,

Washed by rain and hail.

Barriers to man, but not foxes or cats?

Life in the slow lane,

Land abandoned to its fate,

Blue sky reflected in puddles,

Given to dreams, waiting for growth of plants,

Or buildings?

How long will you wait

To find your fate?

Jupiter tryptich

DSC_0123

While painting the autumn woman I started this. It’s three long thin canvases and I’m trying to work out how to paint the new patterns on Jupiter on them.

The latest photos of the planet are amazing and I think it’s going to be a real challengeΒ  This is going to be old fashioned painting, not fluid painting that has become popular. One of the paintings will be exhibited and the other two will be painted during a couple of open days down at Spode Studios.

With luck I will be able to do this!

Elephant in the room.

IMG_20160625_191427

I painted this a few years ago. It was an elephant my friend made for penkhull mystery plays. It was used in a procession onto the village green and was carried by shoulder straps. I think it had cloth legs hanging over the edge to make it look like someone was sitting on the elephant.

It was so amazing I decided to record it as a painting. The frame was made of willow withies then canvas was stretched over the frame and painted white. Finally a fringe was attached to it and other fabric decorations.

The painting went to my friends house but sadly the elephant is no more. I think it was burnt in a fire at the garage it was stored in a few years after the play.

My studio

If you want to see somewhere full of paintings you could look round my studio. There are paintings of people, abstracts, animals, landscapes, buildings, cars, plants, or anything else you can think of.

I tend to use acrylic on canvas but also paint in watercolours and gouache. I have worked with pastel and with pencils and ink pens. I like anything that makes marks. Once at college I even drew with boot polish.

I paint on canvas and paper but I have painted on wooden doors when I was a student..

So yes I’m an artist, I can’t stop!

Sculpture at Trentham Gardens

We visited Trentham Gardens yesterday and it was great to see so many statues at the park. Many were fairy sculptures, several were new (at least to me). The only one that I think had always been there was the sculpture of Medusa being killed by Persius. I can remember seeing it before the Gardens were sold off. Now there are so many more sculptures there. Many of them are of fairies holding dandelion seed heads. There are also wildlife statues including owls, mice, slugs, frogs and other animals. I had a lovely afternoon taking photos of them.

The day was rather overcast and the flowers were past their best but there were also a lot of shapely seed heads to enhance the view. We don’t go to the gardens very often, perhaps once or twice a year. But it is worth visiting.
