My keys

What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time?

I can do without my phone, but I need to get into my house, my car, my shed, my garden gate.

I’ve only ever been locked out a couple of times, the first when I was a child, in that case it was my mum that had slammed the front door shut (it had a yale lock), only to remember she had left the keys inside. I was fairly small and a bit of an athlete so I ended up climbing in through the downstairs toilet window. I managed to let us all in.

The other time I was sharing a house, I left my keys somewhere else and only realised when I was outside the front door. That ended with me sitting on the front doorstep for a couple of hours.

Now I’ve told you I’ve probably jinxed myself to do it again. Luckily I have the number of a locksmith on my phone (which I don’t always keep with me!)

New catflap

I have had problems with my cats opening the internal kitchen door- but they never close it! A friend suggested putting a cat flap in and kindly gave me one. But the door is too thick. It has a honeycomb of cardboard inside so it’s about 2 inches deep. So the catflap I was given was only thin and left the cardboard exposed. I will donate the first catflap to a charity.

I went and bought another one which has a sleeve inside it covering over the internal structure of the door. It’s screwed and glued in place now as four of the screw holes are not accessible because of the door thickness. Now I’ve got to pursuade the cats to use it. At the moment one is but the other two are reluctant. I might have to try treats! I’m hoping this innovation will keep my home warmer.

Cold

Brr it’s cold tonight, the wind is blowing and we might have some snow. The cats can open doors but don’t want to close them! That let’s the draughts through from the back door area. Our cat flap is old and loose through wear and tear. I’ll get up and shut the door, then a cat comes in and pushes the inner floor open and whoosh, cold air. The cats have warm fur so they aren’t bothered, but I’m shivering, brrrr

Old door

I took this photo of an old door at Spode pottery five years ago. I guess you could call it shabby. I would not have seen it but there was some work going on at the main entrance to Spode studios so we had to use a side entrance.

I only found this again because of the marvellous Facebook memories. I don’t know how many hundreds or thousands of photos I’ve taken since this, but not that many get put online, so this one must have felt special to me.

I think this might have been a pottery mould store, there was a collection of several thousand old pottery moulds that were a historical record of the shapes of the ceramics Spode used to make. Unfortunately I think they were destroyed a couple of years ago because they were not going to be used again. I think that sort of destruction is unforgivable.

Cat flap fixed again…

Oh dear! When I got up this morning I found the clear flap part of the cat flap and it’s surround on the floor inside the back door. Clearly our big cat had come through and must have got it stuck round his belly. Luckily I fixed the flap last week so I know which bits to press on to open it up and re-fit the flappy part…. I tried to adjust it… He’s just come back in. Seems OK at the moment, but I don’t want to have to keep putting it back together again!

Cat, shut the door!

It’s cold, there’s a draft from the back door. I could shut the door, but the cats come and go. A paw to pull the door open, or a nose to nudge it from the other side. Result? The door is open about 8 inches and the cold draft gets in. But we are told we need better ventilation because of covid19 so I suppose I shouldn’t complain. I wonder how difficult it would be to put a cat flap in an internal door??

Cats are very clever, but they don’t know ‘how to put the wood in the hole’ (a way of saying shut the door). I guess they have fur coats and can curl up with their nose tucked under their paws or tails. I just wish they could shut the door. Maybe I could put a magnet on a collar and get some sort of mechanism to make it shut, who knows? I’ll just get up and push it too again…

Front door / cell door?

Door

Day 27

Usk Stoke-on-Trent challenge.

Friday 15th May 2020.

The choice of this door was basically because its our barrier to the world. It keeps out people, and keeps us in.

Only when the scientists say its safe to do so will I venture out without a mask.

So my Urban sketches stay indoors or inside the garden. This challenge has given me something to do each day. Keeping me calm, and mostly not winding me up!
