The smallest species of owl in the country I think. I’m adding holly branches to make it more seasonal.

The picture is about 6 inches by 4 inches. I want to work on the feathers and legs and feet.

Those eyes look like they are about to blink at me, and I can imagine the soft but strong feathers fluffed up against a north wind…

As the nursery rhyme goes. .

The North Wind shall blow,

And we shall have snow,

And what shall poor Robin do then?

Poor thing!

He’ll sit in a barn,

And kerp himself warm,

And tuck his head under his wing

Poor thing!

I did a series of illustrations for the canal and rivers Trust a couple of years ago. They were included in a leaflet about James Brindley the canal builder.

Each illustration was acrylic paint on watercolour paper because I wanted a more opaque picture than with watercolours. Each one was in an oval or round frame.

I wish I had a copy of the leaflet but I think they all went..

Continuing the travel theme for the panto. I finished a picture of the pyramids and the angel of the North.

The photos I’m working from are good because they have lots of contrasting orange and blues.

I’ve got the panels propped up on a chair with a cloth over it. This means it’s hard to get at the bottom of the boards

Anyway 5 down, lots more to go!

Blue show

Blue has been chosen as a theme for an exhibition at Spode in the new year. The plans are only just in the pipeline. But the theme means that artists will only be using a true blue, no turquoise or violet.

Other colours allowed are white, grey and black.

I have plans, I have an image in mind. Possibly two, and in totally different directions. I’m also thinking of going large.

I think it will be fun and challenging. Once I find out more I will post more information.

Peeved

This was my stall at our makers market today. Lots of little pictures and glass necklaces for sale plus cards and prints.

I had a lovely time until I came to put everything back in their boxes… 3 tiny paintings were missing.

I’m peeved but I have to accept I can’t watch the stall all the time. But at least someone will get pleasure out of them so I don’t feel upset, just peeved.!

Just to show what I can do when I’m trying to paint realistically. This took about 4 hours. I saw a photo of it on an envelope. I’m taking it to the two craft fairs so I can try and get a commission or two.

Size about 6 inches square.

I’m going to charge a reasonable price. I usually undercharge but I will never get anywhere if I don’t try and ask for a decent amount ( not hundreds). I’m trying to make a small living at this so I have to be fair and friendly. But I cannot keep giving things away which I have done in the past …

What a day. Been painting today and done quite a bit for the craft fair. These are finished or in progress. About 6 or 7 inches square. Then there are lots of tiny ones… Now..a glass of wine and a rest.

Im doing lots of things to take to two craft fairs at the weekend. Looking for inspiration and the right things to paint on. The tiniest are paintings of baubles. I have ribbon to add to them so you could even add them to a tree. I saw a robin in a photo and he was sooooo fluffy I had to paint him…finally Im trying to paint directly onto the little chalk boards so the abbey will need more work.

Two days, one name change from frost woman to druid. The painting is complete. I enjoyed painting as a demonstration while at the exhibition this weekend. Thanks to my friend Raina for modelling for the initial face. Then lots of metallic paints later this image emerged.

I may do a bit more to the dark areas but I’m pretty pleased with it. A good weekends work.

This is a painting called frost woman I think. I started doing it as a demonstration at the exhibition. Someone said she didn’t know how I do it. How do I get things looking right so quickly and someone else said she would need to spend ages working out a design. But I admire both of their work. I guess we are all different. I love patterns and work well with them. And yet struggle with other things. I’m not neat, I don’t really do clean straight lines. I’m often messy, my eyesight isn’t what it was and I don’t think my concentration is as good as it used to be.

But I love painting.
