What’s your favorite game (card, board, video, etc.)? Why?
I don’t really have a favourite game, but chess has become a way of socialising with a friend.
We only just started playing this week, but I found I enjoyed the challenge, and after ten years of not playing it, it made my brain work overtime! My friend is quite good and I was surprised how evenly matched we are.
I’d like to get better at it, but I don’t have the ability to think several moves ahead, I’m more of an artist, looking for patterns in the next move or so. It also means I can make random moves that surprise ‘real’ players. Is that an advantage? Maybe.
I used to like Scrabble, but the one friend we played against used to make up rules. For instance he would add words to another word to make a sentence! He insisted this was OK and would argue and lose his temper when we disagreed. So those games stopped (he would also sneakily swap tiles if he didn’t have good letters).
The final game I used to play was Monopoly with my sisters, that was very competitive. We used to squabble a lot over who was winning. It got too argumentative at Christmas when we used to play, so I was glad when we stopped playing it. X

Today I played chess for the first time in ten years. My friend has acquired a chess set, so we sat in a shady spot by a cafe and had a few games.
The result was 2 games to her 1 to me. Then I found out she’d been in a chess club at school and had been champion in one year! So I didn’t do too badly. I’m not trained so I made some surprising moves where she could see I should have done a different move. But it was fun.
We had a quick go at drafts but didn’t remember the rules. Anyway we will have another game in a few weeks. I need to find a set to practice. Hubby used to be good at it so we might play a game or two. Good for exercising the brain.

What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?
Play chess better. I don’t understand how people can work out several moves ahead. I only know the basics, I learnt from playing against my father as a child. But I don’t know how to castle and I rarely play. I don’t know where our chess set and board are.
When I watched a film about chess players in the 1970’s I was amazed and impressed by them. But they were protégés and must have had some sort of mathematical minds so that they understood the game in great depth. Then of course computers were introduced which started to beat humans. So I would like the ability to beat a computer like Deep Blue. An ambition I’m sure I will never have!

I can’t spell Sicilian…. Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was defence. I didn’t want to draw an army or war image, so I looked at chess. I don’t know how the Sicilian defence works but it seemed like a good idea. Just a felt pen drawing.

Quick sketch : My dusty old glass chess set. Not very well drawn, I’m not sure if I will play with it or put it back away under the cupboard. Sundays #bandofsketchers prompt was ‘Game’.
Pencil and black fine liner pen. In a small A6 sketchpad.

Oh, the things you find under the cupboard, covered in years of dust. I put it away ages ago because one of my old cats used to squirm under there and get stuck.
My chess set is glass. I hope to play a few games whilst things are locked down here. I’m not good at it, I can’t tell you how far ahead check mate is, and I’m never sure how or when to ‘Castle’.
I drew this because today’s sketching challenge from USK Stoke was playing games and I don’t know where my scrabble set has gone….. Day 24 of thirty. Drawn in pencil crayons and permanent markers.
I enjoyed using these colours, they may not be an exact match for the reality, but red and green are complementary colours, as are orange and blue. I thought they gave it some pizazz…!
