Mend him

From the Internet ‘Kintsugi, (literally gold seams) is a traditional repair method that takes the broken or chipped parts of cherished vessels, glues them back together with a Japanese lacquer, and paints the seams with gold or silver powder.’

I’ve taken that idea to create this possibly last portrait of my hubby. It’s called ‘Mend Him’, and it’s my wish to put him back together again. It’s a bit rough and ready, but it expresses my feeling of loss. I think it captures his tiredness as he got older… I started this a few months before he died.

I miss him so much and if I could I would mend him, turn back time, use any power available to restore him to his best. X

Yes

Have you ever broken a bone?

I’ve broken a few bones in my life. Luckily they mended.

I don’t know if I should give personal information out about my health, and yet I have shared before. So I will talk about something that happened more than thirty years ago.

I will talk about one injury which was very painful. I slipped on the top stair of a friends house and bumped down every single step on my bottom. Instead of sympathy all my friends just laughed! I realised I had hurt myself, so went to the accident unit at the hospital., in those days you could get checked over much more quickly.

After about four hours of standing up (I couldn’t sit) the doctor diagnosed a fractured coccyx (your tail bone). He said he wouldn’t xray the area, but that it would take six to eight weeks to get better. In the meantime I needed padding to support my weight, so I bought a blow up swimming ring. It was very strange going to work and sitting on a blue ring covered in goldfish. I got some smart and silly remarks from colleagues. But eventually I was OK…

Update, not the battery?

The breakdown man arrived. He asked what had happened and I explained that the battery had been going and in the end the engine would not turn over. I also pointed out there was oil around the engine rocker box gasket. He said he would check a few things.

Knock on the door. Hello, it’s your starter motor. It’s stopped working. It is no more…. I had thoughts of ‘monty pythons’ dead parrot sketch. The battery may still have a bit of life in it, but until the starter motor is replaced its not worth changing. The man had bump started the car, the problem was if he switched it off it would not start again without bump starting it again.

We sat in the car till it warmed up and the snow and ice melted off it. Then I drove it round to the garage we usually go to. Its closed till Monday but I just had to leave the car parked outside. I will ring Monday morning to explain!

Cycling

I was thinking about when I used to cycle several years ago. I used to be able to ride for miles. Unfortunately I was knocked off my bike and sustained a head injury. When I recovered I carried on cycling, but I did not know the brazing on the front of the bike had been damaged. I was cycling up a hill when the headset and down tube seperated. The front wheel bent forward and the forks collapsed!

I decided to have the bike repaired as I only have short legs, I’d tried getting a new bike, but it wasn’t the right size or shape of frame. Unfortunately the bike shop I took my bike to was a little disorganised. They lost the frame for a year. I didn’t have a bike, so I took driving lessons. By the time I got the bike back I had a job that I had to commute to, so I used the bike less and less. I eventually gave up. I keep thinking I will try and get on my bike again, but my hips and back are too stiff…. Life, sometimes it really gets you down.

Sorrow

I won’t show my face fully because I feel like every part of me is breaking up into tiny pieces of nothing. I am numb. I want to talk, but I want to stay silent. But the creative urge pushes me to make an image of how I’m feeling, inside as well as out. They say time heals. I hope it can glue my soul back together, or a stich in time will darn my minds pieces into a whole again. I am torn into atoms and scattered.

14 years bad luck?

Temporary fix…. The mirror we bought at the spares shop wasn’t the right size. Hubby held it while I went to get some insulation tape. Then as I tried to tape the mirror in place… SMASH! He dropped it and it cracked. Luckily we were still at the shop so I bought another one. I’ve booked the car in the garage so I’ve decided just to tape the new broken mirror over the old one. I’ve used the tape over and inside the drivers door so it supports the weight. I can see behind me now and I always use all my mirrors so I should be OK till tomorrow….

Fridge alarm!

What a day. I was going to relax then do some gardening. I hadn’t had breakfast so made coffee. Then suddenly the fridge freezer started beeping! We knew it was that because we had the same problem a few months ago. The freezer did need defrosting so I turned it off and propped the freezer door open while putting the frozen food into the fridge. But it kept beeping even when it was off, must have a battery in it!

Too noisy, several decibels. We decided to go out. More of that later…

I’d turned the fridge off but it was still beeping when we got in… Argh! So loud! So hubby decided to kick the fridge! Like that’s going to help! He kept pushing it and moving it backwards, trying to get it level. I switched it back on and dried the fridge and freezer. I was shouting ‘just shut up!’ I dragged it forward, something was clunking underneath, the tone of the sound changed. I dragged it further forward, a lower, slightly different tone. One more drag, clunk! It stopped! What!

Happy now. But although I don’t want to I think we will be forced to buy a new one.
