I’ve just watched a drama documentary on TV that explains how important blood donations are. They are used for blood transfusions, and only certain blood types can be transfered between donor and  recipient. I decided to look up more information. See below.

“The eight most common blood types are A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, and AB-. These types are determined by the presence or absence of the Rh factor protein and the A and B antigens:

  • Rh factor: If the Rh factor protein is present, the blood type is RhD positive (+), and if it’s absent, the blood type is RhD negative (-).
  • A and B antigens: These antigens determine whether the blood type is A or B. 
Rarest blood type: Chart and compatibility

There are also many other blood group systems, including the Duffy, K antigen (Kell), Lutheran, and Kidd blood groups. The International Society for Blood Transfusion has identified 42 blood-group systems in addition to the ABO and Rh systems. 

When matching blood types for a transfusion, it’s important to consider not only the A, B, and Rh antigens, but also minor antigens that aren’t routinely detected during blood typing. A process called cross-matching can help detect these minor antigens. “

Heart and Love

Small drawing of a heart that I drew on top of a bit of black monoprinting. I’d cut this section out of another bit to create a negative space for a portrait, I’ll post that drawing later. Done during a student led session that just finished tonight. Part of idea generation for the illustration course I’m doing.

One thing I do need to look at is fonts, it’s hard to draw them accurately and I struggle to copy them, and I didn’t have a particular font in mind, just the idea the letters should be red, I might try and make them look a bit more like blood with a fine ink pen.

Colours

So colours represent specific emotions? Maybe? But who sets them. Is it a historical thing? Some countries have black as their colour of mourning. But others use white, and who knows what else might be favoured elsewhere. Red is hot, fast, speed, fast cars are often red. But what about red for danger. Traffic lights, live wires and of course blood? But red can be sweet like fruit too.

Green has been found to be calming, and maybe blue too. Linked with the colours of growing plants. Green indoor plants can calm workers. Now green walls of plants are fashionable.

Pink for girls, blue for boys. But a couple of hundred years ago it was the other way round. Perhaps our use of colours to represent emotions is just fashion and fad!
