Yes

Do you remember life before the internet?

They didn’t exist, then the green light started blinking… The cursor came later, they were glorified typewriters. I don’t know if they came with a mouse?

I wasn’t a member of the computer club. But about five were lined up in the science lab at school. I sometimes saw green text on them.

One day I went to an exhibition about computer art. There was a pc set up and on the screen it said type something, a phrase, can’t remember. But I typed the words… Nothing happened,,, I typed again, and again and again.. Nothing. I typed till the screen was full and the original message had gradually disappeared off the screen!

I wonder what the people running the exhibition thought? It was only a few months later that I found out about the ENTER key!

My first computer experience

Write about your first computer.

My experience of computers was non existent when I was at college in the ’80’s. I went to an exhibition in a gallery and I remember being faced with a screen that said type ‘hello world!’ Or something similar and you would get a nice surprise.. So I typed:

Hello world

Nothing happened

I typed:

Hello world

Hello world

Hello world…

Over and over, the instructions soon disappeared off the top of the screen. I was frustrated, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know how to get back to the start. I didn’t know how to scroll back up the screen.

I gave up. Nowhere in the instructions did it say ‘press the enter key’!

It took me a few years before I bothered with a computer again.

Random photos

Searching through my files found these old photos that were saved in a file that was on my old phone. Some of them I recognise, others must be more than 3 years old. I need to work out how to transfer them across to the other files…..

So there is Westport lake, a wooden screen at a cafe, a window in St Thomas Church, penkhull, a cumulo nimbus cloud, a drink flask, paper butterflies I cut out for a birthday and a painting I did of my friend decorating an elephant she made for the penkhull mystery plays.

I’m sure I will find more to share.

I hide myself away…

Here, behind this computer screen, I hide myself away,  within the social media that connects us day to day. ..

I am in contact with the world which all around me spins, and yet I am so far away, real life no longer wins.

My mind I linked to apps and sites, I have to get my fix,           of whiz bang colours, cats and dogs and all those selfie pics.

My eyes see you on glass and chrome, my fingers tap the keys, you see me on your 4G phone. There is no known release.

I’m trapped within this modern fun, and never see the sun,  nor move where air is fresh and free, my life’s a lonely one.
