If you could be a character from a book or film, who would you be? Why?

Now that a woman has played Dr Who on TV I would love to play the character. I’ve watched the television series over decades, from the 1960’s. The doctor was always my hero and was one of the things that got me into science fiction.

Suddenly when the doctor regenerated as a female I think it gave young girls the opportunity to imagine themselves fighting daleks and cyber men, having to tackle technical problems and fix mechanical issues. It made her a choice of hero to play as they are growing up. And that makes the show greater than it was although there was a lot of antagonism from some fans. Life changes and why should characters stay the same?

I know I would have fun!

What tattoo do you want and where would you put it?

I love Dr Who but there have been many actors who have played Dr Who and although I have my favourites I think I would have a picture of the Tardis whirling through space and time. It’s an iconic piece of science fiction history. I’d have a tattoo on my ankle. But it would have to be very small as I don’t like the idea of pain!

Heros and Villans
Have to be the various iterations of Dr Who and his /her protagonists. In the early days I used to hide behind the settee when the Daleks or Cybermen came on the screen.

The first Dr Who was played by William Hartnell. I have had the privilege of watching almost all of them, (different actors have played him/her over the years. That is except when I didn’t have a TV in the 1980s. Of the modern villains I have to say I think the weeping angels (silent, only move if you close your eyes, creep up on you) were one of the scariest. I like it because of its English Charm. Which other country would have an alien traveling in a police call box, (a phone box for police). Bigger on the inside and travelling through time and space, THE TARDIS. My favourite!

I’ve been trying to paint a galaxy over a few weeks, dots and smudges, dots and smudges…. Then I got a bit bored so I looked up images of the sci-fi classic Dr Who and decided to add his tardis with a bit of a sparkle to make it a bit more dramatic. X

One day a few years ago we visited the Churnet valley railway. We got on at Cheddleton and traveled to Froghall wharf. We didn’t realise but there was a Dr Who dalek at the station, plus a tardis! We stopped for coffee and cake and watched as the remote control dalek trundled up and down the platform while people took photos and videos.

I’ve been watching Dr Who on TV since it started in the 1960’s. I used to hide behind the settee when the cyber men came on. I still watch when it’s on now.

The Churnet Valley railway is based on a line which runs between Cheddleton and Froghall, also running towards Leek in the Staffordshire moorlands. Plans are being worked on to extend the line towards Leek and possibly Stoke as the track bed is mainly still in situ except where they built a supermarket in Leek on top pf the track.

David Tennant is back as the 14th Doctor Who. He’s starring alongside Catherine Tate as, Donna Noble and as usual they try and save the world.

This digital drawing was done in about 2006? I drew it at a website called Sketchfu that no longer exists, I did quite a few portraits on my old wacom tablet. I’ve always been quite proud of this one!

I love that Tennant is back for three special episodes over the next few weeks. It’s made me happy!

My alternative universe

Describe your life in an alternate universe.

Dr Who would be real (what a character!). Scientists would have solved global warming. People would be kinder to each other. There would be enough food to feed the population of the world.

No one would be called a bleeding heart Liberal, because everyone would be. Things would unfortunately happen as normal, like death and taxes, but maybe they would be organised a bit better rather than taking from the poor to give to the rich.

There would be a hypocrite law, basically if you acted like a hypocrite you could be fined for deliberately gaslighting people. I guess there would still be freedom of speech but hate speech would be banned. In my alternative universe we would be in touch with good aliens who wanted to help us survive.

Life would be benign but not boring. And all animals would not be hunted or pushed into extinction. I’m a bit too much of a pessimist though to believe all this could happen.

(I sound like a Miss World contestant from the 1970’s!)

Digital drawing of David Tennant from ten years ago. Drawn at a now defunct website called Sketchfu. I’d come in from work and go and draw on line to relax. I’ve always loved the BBC Sci fi series Dr Who and David Tennant in the modern era, and Tom Baker in the classic series were my favourite Dr’s.

Sixty years

There is an anniversary this year, the sixtieth year of Dr Who. I can remember hiding behind the settee when I was a child when I saw the monsters on TV in the programme. Not only Daleks were frightening. Cybermen and Autons too. The Doctor would always be caught in a cliffhanger situation at the end of an episode. In the next one he would solve the problem and rescue people on the planets he had landed on. In those days stories lasted four or five weeks. After a hiatus of a few years when the series seemed to have stopped for good it came back in the form of a film starring Paul McGann. Followed by a resurrected Christopher Eccleston in a brand new series. I know they are planning a spectacular story for the sixtieth story. I hope it lives up to expectations. I’m still a fan.
