Moving about

What are your biggest challenges?

My biggest challenge seems to be movement inside and outside the house.

Inside I’m unsteady, I use my stick because my feet get muddled sometimes. They twist round each other and trip me up. Going up and down stairs is fun, especially when the cats decide to sleep on the stairs it’s a good job they have white patches so I can see them in the dark.

Outside is a challenge too. Just getting down the steps, hanging on to handrails, then walk a few steps to get to the car. But I get nervous driving, in the past I had hubby with me. Now? I get lifts with people if I can if I’m going any distance. I imagine myself stuck with a flat tyre, or out of petrol, or lost, or too tired to carry on. What happens if the person I’m going to see is out? I think I drove less that 500 miles last year. Memory is of driving all over the country, no longer. My challenge is to get better? I wish.

Old TV

What makes you feel nostalgic?

The WordPress image library is hard to use to find British pictures. I was looking for an image of “Robin Hood” but I could only find the bird, or a coat hood or the hood (bonnet) of a car.

I want to share some of the 1960’s TV shows I remember from childhood. Some of them are being shown again.

They include ‘the Avengers’, not the marvel ones, but John Steed and his various female companions. For example Mrs Emma Peel and Tara King. They were secret agents.

Then there is the Champions, three investigators, starring Stuart Damon, Alexandra Bastido and William Gaunt. They were transformed into people with superpowers after a plane crash in Tibet.

Also, Randall and Hopkirk (deceased). Marty Hopkirk is killed in the first episode and returns as a ghost to help his friend to undertake Private Investigations. Marty’s wife Jeanie is often involved.

There are so many more, Dr Who, the Tomorrow People, Space 1999, Jason King, Department S. The Saint, the Persuaders and The adventures of Robin Hood…. So many, some from the 1970’s. And not forgetting Gerry Anderson shows like Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, and Joe 90. They give me a warm glow if I see the programmes, although some of them haven’t been on for decades. I get drawn back to sitting infront of the TV watching my favourite shows. Getting excited about their adventures. Life was so much simpler then.

Political views

How have your political views changed over time?

When I was young I voted one way, the same as the rest of my family. I was very young and influenced by their long term beliefs.

When I left home I moved into shared accommodation, I realised I had been living in a bubble at home, I hadn’t had the responsibility of paying bills before, or other things to deal with, like not having hot water and having to shower at the college. I met different people and they had different political views. Over the years I changed my priorities and my political allegencies.

All I would say is that it’s good to think for yourself, look at how life is and make a decision that is good for you, and the people around you.

I don’t know

Share what you know about the year you were born.

I was born on a beautiful planet

A long time ago.

We hadn’t visited the moon

And Superman hadn’t flown.

The world was overpopulated

With a few billion less people

No such thing as a Tesla existed

But we were not bothered.

Shops mainly closed on Sundays

And had half days in the week.

Butchers shops had sawdust

My head was a lot closer to the ground!

No mobile phones, lucky to have a phone box

Wimpy meals instead of McDonald’s burgers

Coffee was in a bottle, liquid, with chicory?

Sweets had not shrunk.

No sweeteners, no noodles, except in Vesta  meals

We hadn’t been decimalised!

We were not in Europe (common market).

And Dr Who hadn’t time travelled yet.

Enough information?

Sometimes

Are you a good judge of character?

What’s on the inside isn’t the same as the outside. You might think one thing about a person based on their physical appearance only to find they are completely different to what you expect.

I’d say mostly that I’m a good judge of character. I’ve met many people over my career and my home life, and mostly it’s been OK. But not always, on a couple of occasions I had to give up on friends who tried to split me and my hubby up, I found out one was saying things about me to needle my hubby into leaving me. I realised that the language he was using was in her way of speaking. It was her attitudes that he was spouting. When we talked it through he thankfully understood that. The second situation was a woman that tried to have an affair with him. She was always calling round when I was out. He told me what she was up to, and we ended the friendship.

Other people have fooled me at work, but you cotton on eventually. It can cause heartache when you mistakenly trust people. But you have to live and learn.

Difficult to say…

Is your life today what you pictured a year ago?

I really find it hard to predict

A year ago I didn’t think I would go through so much, grief, hospital appointments, memories, loneliness.

Stepping through that year, from there to here, then to now, I had hoped that I would be starting to have better times by now, but the administration of suffering is hard to maintain. One thing after another, a bill here, a repair there, treatments, investigations, infections, tremors, everything. I must have cost the nhs thousands. It’s hard to keep up and also chase things up.

I’m not really where I wanted to be now but hopefully will be in 2025.

Eggs, flour, milk, lemon juice, sugar…

List your top 5 grocery store items.

I would choose to make a coherent recipe….

Thin wide pancakes

Not thick small ones

Get the pan hot

With oil in a thin layer

Swirl your pancake mix

Round the base

Cook till it starts to brown

Then flip!

Not my style of stack

I prefer a crepe.

A man?

Describe a man who has positively impacted your life.

One of the reasons I love science is that I started watching “the sky at night” bbc TV programme from an early age.

The presenter at that time was Patrick Moore, later to be knighted. He was an amateur astronomer who popularised science in general and astronomy in particular. This was at a time when most programmes were presented by men. What it did do was help me get into critical thinking and formed an interest in science me.

The reason why I question the query asking which MAN influenced me is the fact that women presenters could be as important. For instance Maggie Aderin-Pocock is one of the main presenters of ‘the sky at night’ now. She has been doing it for several years now and her enthusiasm and intelligence shines through.

Kindness

Tell us one thing you hope people say about you.

I hope people see that I am kind

That I care about things

Wrap my heart and soul

Round those who need.

But if they don’t see it?

Not important,

as long as things improve

Kindness can be hidden too

Who needs recognition?

If you can help anyway.

And yes, I am soft hearted.

In our garden

Do you ever see wild animals?

Yes I see wild animals, mostly birds including Robins, blackbirds and wrens, but a squirrel jumped onto our garden fence last week, right outside the kitchen window. I’ve previously seen hedgehogs and also spotted a fox a few years ago. My garden is a bit of a wildlife haven with bushes and trees for the animals to rest in. There’s also a leaky pond, so sometimes we have tadpoles and frogs.

I must put out some bird food soon. I’m a bit nervous though of slipping on the leaves out there. My garden is on a slope so I could end up sliding down it in the mud. Must be careful.
