Yes

Do you remember life before the internet?

They didn’t exist, then the green light started blinking… The cursor came later, they were glorified typewriters. I don’t know if they came with a mouse?

I wasn’t a member of the computer club. But about five were lined up in the science lab at school. I sometimes saw green text on them.

One day I went to an exhibition about computer art. There was a pc set up and on the screen it said type something, a phrase, can’t remember. But I typed the words… Nothing happened,,, I typed again, and again and again.. Nothing. I typed till the screen was full and the original message had gradually disappeared off the screen!

I wonder what the people running the exhibition thought? It was only a few months later that I found out about the ENTER key!

When did life get so complicated?

Just read a fellow bloggers post about the paper trail (or lack of it) to get her vaccum cleaner fixed. It reminded me of recent interactions with the Internet where I have struggled to find out information.

First you have to find the right website, then you have to register, add a password, make sure it’s strong enough, accept cookies…

Then you have to find the right section of the website to fill in. I thought I’d done that, but when I visited the place I was trying to register with they didn’t have my information. Turns out I’d registered to get special offers not service!

Back to the website. I found the right section after ringing the helpline and waiting 40 minutes for an answer. So I had to attach documents. Luckily I have a printer/ scanner. So I created .pdf files. Is everyone following so far?

I sent the documents only to get a message back saying one of them was too old. I found the up to date one (which inconveniently had tea spilt on it) it was still legible.

I had to send it off again, hopefully they have it now.

Then, a friend who has no Internet rang. Could I help? She’d had a letter telling her to go to a council office. But she couldn’t find out where? I checked the Internet and got a phone number, rang it, after twenty minutes I got an answer. Sorry this department doesn’t deal with that… You need another department. (the select number 3 option did not include the right section) She gave me the direct phone number (wow!) but there was only an answer machine so I left a message. THEN I turned the letter over…. The address she needed was on the back…. I could go on, but everyone probably can relate.

Why is this happening? Cost cutting, cheapness and a belief that everyone is computer literate….

Information!

You get an email. We need this information, we must have this document. Please send a PDF of your certificate. Please fill in the form marked exhibit B!

Well it feels like that. I’m trying to find bits of information that I haven’t seen for thirty years! It’s just part of our modern life. Everything is online. But what happens if you don’t have it or are not totally expert in it. I’ve transferred PDFs but can’t find them now….

I rang up. Yes of course you can post the information in to us! Phew. My hubby never uses our computer. So I’m his secretary. Better than having it thrown out of the window!

Why do things go wrong

Splat!

Just when you think things are OK sometimes they go wrong.

Case in point, we have to get copies of documents sent in for something. I collected everything together but a couple of things are missing. We went to the shop and got a copy of the sales invoice. Then I checked a document and its not up to date, it was done on line but we were never sent the original documents. Much head scratching, swear words, contacting people. I hope I have sorted it out, but you never know.

I suppose the thing to realise is that lots of people are struggling too. It’s just life and beauracracy, we have to have bits of paper to prove things. But now they do things online… It’s not simple. You have to log in and remember passwords. Only I have a different one for everything! Splat, my mind is whirling.

Not that bad…

Lockdown, I can only go out for exercise and do essential shopping.

But when you think about it, it’s not that bad. I’m not stuck on an island in the middle of nowhere with no one to talk to. I am warm, I have food, I cn talk to people on the phone or online. I might be getting a bit bored. But it’s not like in the past, when I was a child. On Sundays everywhere was closed. No one that worked in simple, low paid jobs, could afford a car. Very few eople had tv’s and there was only one channel and a few radio stations. Computers didn’t exist except in universities or in the armed forces. The air was dirty and polluted, coal fires were the norm to heat houses. It was a different world.

Now we are linked? Possibly too much. But if we stay away from each other as much as we can? Things might just get better…

Good morning, I am your assessor, please fill in this form.

How?

Online

….. How?

Online, on your laptop.

I don’t have a laptop!

On your PC or smart phone then.

….. Excuse me?

Yes?

I don’t own a laptop, PC or smartphone. I only have a pay as you go phone….
Well use the library….

… But the library is shut. They closed it and made people redundant. Now they don’t have enough volunteers.

Don’t you have a friend or relative to help you?

I don’t, they are all elderly.

Well, you can use the web cafe down the road.

Where’s that?

Down the road, in the precinct.

OK, thanks….. One more question?

Yes?

How do you use a computer, I’ve never owned one or used one! I’m 63, always worked with my hands, never used anything but pencil and paper. Never did IT at school, we used slates and chalk till I was ten. Finished school at 13. Went to work down the pit.

Sorry sir. You will have to find someone else to help you, your time is up!

The web

Apparently its 30 years since Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the world wide Web. The Internet had pre existed the Web.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee is an English engineer and computer scientist. He is a professor of computer science at Oxford University and MIT.
More information can be found about him at Wikipedia
The idea of computers had been thought of from centuries ago. For instance there was a “difference engine” invented by Babbage. And then calculating machines such as the one that broke the enigma code in the second world war. Science fiction stories imagined huge single computers that could take over the world and it was up to a human (usually a man) to defeat it.
Now we have a massive Web of computers all over the world. I wonder if it will become self aware?
