I love the illustrations of little cherubs , cheeks puffed out, blowing ships across maps or in ancient paintings. That was the inspiration for this digital drawing in ArtRage oils. I had the metallic option set to 100%. You have a choice of 4 paint brushes and a sliding scale from 1 to 100.
I also love the song “blow the wind southerly” I think this would make an interesting illustration for it.
This is a free app I downloaded a couple of years ago. I have deleted other apps, but I kept this one because I like using it so much. I think it’s in Google app store or Google play if you look… I’m never quite sure how to find things there though.
Colours, shapes and texture make up this pattern. Using digital apps can create images that would not be easy to create on paper or canvas.
Once you have done that you could use another app to duplicate and twist the images. I love patterns and continue to create images like this.
It’s really not hard to do and it would be good to see more art being created in this way. Be brave! Have a go! You might surprise yourself.

Sad or sadness?
Down turned mouth and soulful eyes,
A flicker of tears moisten the lashes.
A sigh finds its way stifled by closed lips.
What made that face?
A drawing application,
Or my thoughts dragged from finger to screen.
A digital frown of sorrow….
A sigh finally escapes.
No I’m not feeling sad but I just thought I would try and draw emotions. I would like to do a series of simple pictures to express different feelings.
I was watching a programme about Joseph Wright, a famous painter from Derby who used chiarascuro to paint fantastic images, from blacksmiths at work to factories and landscapes. His first painting that was bought for the city of Derby. It was paid for by public donation. It was called the Alchemist. Later in his life he went on a grand tour of Europe. He painted the volcano Vesuvius as an explosion of red lava and dark boiling clouds of smoke and ash.
I tried to do a quick digital sketch of what I saw but it was too complex to represent so I made up my own idea. This was drawn in ArtRage oils and the metallic setting was on about 50%.
I used the drawing tool on 100% for the wider brush strokes and 50% and 25% for the thinner lines. I also had the phone in its side so the image is in landscape format.
I’m playing with digital sketches to decide whether to paint or draw a card design. After the first set done in a sketching app, I did the last one as an artrage oil sketch – over drawing a picture of a firework exploding that I did last week. I’m happier with that than the others.
I’m only doing these because I’ve got a cold. I was due to go out and go to an art group but I woke up feeling snotty this morning. But you can’t keep me away from drawing or painting for long. I’ve got a large peice of foam board in the car to paint on for something else this week….. But that’s another story.

Digital red horse…
When I was a child I was fascinated in trying to draw horses and horses heads. At one stage I drew a lovely picture of a dappled grey horse in pencil when I was about 9. I sold it for sixpence! I just remembered it after all these years after doing this digital drawing of a horse. It’s red because the original drawing in ArtRage oils was a flower, then a poppy, then a heart and now a horse.
Here are two of the previous drawings. I can’t find the heart, but I think that might be on my phone. I seem to be saving things in two places so it depends which I use to create the art.
What I’m getting at is the fun to be had by morphing one drawing into another, covering your tracks, but being influenced by colour and shape.
Back to horses. I always seem to draw them in profile, and facing to the left. I also seem to do the same thing with profiles of faces, but when I draw people in 3/4 (half way between profile and straight on) the faces are turned slightly to the right. I tried to discuss this with a friend who also drew profiles. She always did faces looking right in profile. I wondered if it depends on if you are right or left handed. She was left handed and drew opposite to me.
One of my main struggles with horse drawings I that I’m not good at their mouths and also their eyes. I don’t use a photo to copy from when I’m drawing them. I try and use my memory.
So there you are, not much about real horses except obviously I love them.
Both these drawings were done as digital finger paintings in ArtRage oils, a free app in the Galaxy play store.
I’ve had the app for ages, so like a lot of things you become blase and don’t remember to use it, but it’s there in the background. Anyway I liked playing with these drawings, there is a metallic option and with the first I gradually dialled down the metallic pen as I worked my way out . This also has the effect of making the colours paler. I only used the thick oil brush on its widest setting.
The second picture, poppy, was drawn over the top of the first. Instead of just using one brush I used the driest brush option and used dots as well as streaking the red colours across the picture.
I’m sure there is much more I can do. I love vibrant colours and this app gets me excited. I love having a 3d effect when I’m drawing digitally.

Blue and cold, chill my bones,
Snow falls sifted like icing sugar.
Whorls of wind taking heat away.
to where? Icy fingertips frosted nose,
Ankles and feet lumped with shivers,
Cooled heels , cold arms, breath softly turned to cold fog.
Heating is on but not making a dent in the chilly room.
Yesterday was glorious, brilliant, sunny.
Now I need thermal clothes to encapsulate me.
It may not warm till spring, when suns return heralds warmth.
Till then, head down, under duvet, I try and stay warm.
Winter begins in Autumns arms.
Green men tangled in a big green square,
I just wrote a really bad poem about Green men but I decided to delete it and not inflict it on you!
These were drawn in ArtRage oils, a free app from samsung galaxy. They were duplicated in an app called layout. The colours were enhanced using Instagram filters.
I like the way the digital brushes give it a more 3d impression. You can use ArtRage with 4 brush styles and metallic or non metallic paint. There is also a slider to change the size of the brush head.
Layout allows you to choose up to 9 pictures that can be moved or flipped to make new patterns. As you work your way through editing the pictures you end on a page that takes your drawing into Instagram, here you can edit the picture further. Eventually you end up with whatever image you want modified to suit your requirements.
