Blogging!

How do you waste the most time every day?

I curse myself sometimes, because I can spend far too much time blogging and posting to social media.

I do have a purpose, as a part time artist and illustrator I like to keep people informed of what I’ve been doing during the day. So I posted pictures of the life drawing session I went to earlier on today.

I also post little poems, I don’t pretend to be a poet though, if it rhymes that’s a bonus.

Truly though, I ought to give it a break, but is it dopamine hits you get from picking up your phone and seeing you’ve got a like? If social media removed the buttons perhaps they would get less traffic. And that’s what it’s about isn’t it? Keeping people occupied and interested in the next new thing, be it politics or advertising. So then you get the “I’ll just watch one more video” feeling, and by the time you realise its 3.30am in the morning….

So yes, blogging is probably time wasting, it’s also shouting into an echo chamber, you hear yourself, but does anyone else care. As the saying goes “why don’t you just go and do something less boring instead?”….

Hang on, just got a notification, must check my phone…

It has to be trifle

Trifle

Which food, when you eat it, instantly transports you to childhood?

Christmas and Easter, we always had trifle.

It was a concoction of jelly (strawberry or raspberry) in the base with trifle sponges, hard fingers of dry sugary sponge that swelled up and absorbed the jelly. This made it firm when it set for the next layer. This was always blancmange, not custard. A raspberry, strawberry or chocolate layer made with blancmange powder, sugar and boiled in with a pint of milk. Then the top was double cream whipped to stiff peaks.

Mom used to decorate the top with silver coloured balls and hundreds and thousands (coloured sprinkles), or maybe some tinned peach slices or glacé cherries? When I was young we didn’t have strawberries or raspberries or blackberries in the winter or spring. Fruit was more seasonal than it is now. It was usually grown here, so it just wasn’t available.

Memories like this are great. Whenever I think of comfort food it has to be trifle. Mom’s secret ingredient as we got a bit older was sherry added to the jelly. Nowadays I prefer a small amount of port. I don’t use sponge fingers as they are full of sugar. I use sugar free jelly and sweetner in the blancmange (which is getting hard to source). It’s still full fat cream though. I usually put blueberries in the jelly, unheard of in my childhood days.

Maybe I could try pomegranate seeds in one? I like blackberries, maybe blackcurrants? And I’ve even considered making my own jelly with sheets of gelatine. However I make it, it still brings back good childhood memories.

Marie Curie

WordPress free image. They don’t have pictures of Marie Curie, only Marie Antoinnett!

Who is your favorite historical figure?

Marie Salomea Skłodowska–Curie was a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win a Nobel Prize twice, and the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two scientific fields. Wikipedia

I had to look up some of her details as I could not remember the spelling of her maiden name. She won the Nobel prizes for Chemistry and Physics. She found both Radium and Polonium within tons of a mineral called Pitchblende. She slowly dissolved and precipitated the mineral so that the Radium and Polonium was washed out. She and her husband Pierre Curie worked in an old shed attached to the Paris University to do the work.

It took her a long time to be accepted on her University course because she was a woman. And after her husband died after being run over by a horse drawn omnibus she continued to work on the discoveries of radiation. She worked with Ernest Rutherford who had discovered Gamma rays when he found photographic plates had been fogged despite not being exposed to light. Curie managed to concentrate Radium which was used to paint onto watch dials and hands. The paintresses who used the luminous paint used to point their brushes with their lips and many of them got cancer in their mouth and Jaws because the damaging effects of radiation were not understood.

Marie Curie had daughters who ran an Xray ambulance in the first world war, I can’t remember if Marie Curie was involved with that.

I’m sorry I don’t know all the details, but she was certainly a strong roll model for female scientists and helped grow a whole new branch of Chemistry and Physics.

My first crush

Write about your first crush.

I was seven, he was eight. I think his name was Henry? We were in the same school. All the girls liked him. He had a nice laugh, he was tall, (about 3 ft 6 inches?) and he had blond hair. He was in the class above me.

I can remember playing tick and chasing round the playground after him. I remember standing on the wide shallow steps where we waited to go into school after breaks and jumping down them because he encouraged us to play tinker, taylor, soldier, sailor. Many old nursery rhymes had games made up to go with them. I don’t think he was bothered about me with my hornrimmed glasses and pudding bowl haircut. But it was only a crush, I was far too young to have any real interest in boys. I think I liked him because he was clever and kind…

I think he moved to a different school when he left junior school. I don’t remember ever seeing him again. It’s funny how you don’t think of anyone for years and then a prompt like this sparks a memory and there you are back in the past…

Just rememberd another nursery rhyme:

Georgie Porgie pudding and pie,

Kissed the girls and made them cry,

When the boys came out to play,

Georgie Porgie ran away!

And I remembered my grandmother has a teacup with a cartoon of this rhyme on it….

Scotland

What countries do you want to visit?

As a non flier, and someone who isn’t keen on ships I’m rather limited to where I would like to visit. I have been over the Channel on a ferry once and visited a few countries, but things like the Herald of Free Enterprise sinking put me off the idea, and going in a very long tunnel? No thanks.

I’ve enjoyed visiting Wales, I still do, but I’ve only got as far north as Carlisle in England and not even into the Scottish Borders. The thing is Scotland is a big country, there are Highlands and Lowlands, and all the beautiful lochs. The biggest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis, and that’s in Scotland. Also the summer days are longer there as it is nearer the North Pole (not much closer) but it does affect the day length. And you are more likely to see the Aurora Borealis in Scotland than anywhere else in the UK.

Scotland had it’s own kings, and King James the sixth of Scotland became James the First of England when Queen Elizabeth the first died. There have been other famous Scottish Royals including Bonnie Prince Charlie.

I would like to visit the capital one day. Edinburgh is renowned for it’s yearly arts Festival, and it together with Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness are it’s main cities.

Scotland has world fame for it’s Whisky brewing and many fine Scottish Malts are distilled on the mainland and also on numerous islands about the coast.

I’d like to paint the scenery and visit some of its famous landscapes. I’m sure I could spend a great deal of time exploring. Maybe one day we will visit.

Being logical?

Free media used

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

I like being logical and working things out. I’ve always been good at guessing who the murderer is in films and programmes like Miss Marple (you can tell from this I’m probably not young). I also enjoy trying to work out who is the criminal in novels like the Brother Cadfael Mysterys by Ellis Peters.

I’m interested in medical mysteries and I like working out what problems people have with their eyes for instance . You can tell by looking at how big their eyes look behind their glasses (bigger eyes-longsighted, smaller eyes-short sighted). So I was fascinated by the TV series House, and also the Mentalist.

I love Spock in Star Trek and have generally tried to be less emotional, but lately that has been hard to maintain. Even so my hubby calls me Captain Sensible!

Sometimes I overdo it. I’ve suddenly felt the need to pack my shopping bags precisely. Is this too controlling? I think I’m trying to control the uncontrollable, which is really illogical!

I’m interested in science and would love to have more knowledge. I enjoy learning and finding out things. So yes, this is my favourite thing about myself, which actually surprised me, because I thought I would have said art and creativity. But those are imprinted on my DNA. Knowledge though, intruiges me, and makes me want to find out more.

Soon

How do you want to retire?

The UK government changed the retirement age a few years ago. They bought in a sliding scale so that women cannot retire until they are 65 or above (it was 60), and men’s retirement age had gone up from 65 to I think 67?

What that does effects millions of women and men. I would have retired by now, I could have still worked, but it means I cannot get my state pension yet, even though I have been paying into all my working life. The result is that a lot of people will get less of an overall pension for what is left of their lives, and are more likely to die before they get it. That also means the government will get to keep more of it.

So? People were living longer until recently, but the age you die has actually reduced, especially with the drop in wages, and increases in poverty. Older people tend to struggle to pay bills or afford to heat their homes, and as they are more likely to have health issues their lives may be shortened.

One possibility though is that the governments decision might be overturned. The WASPI women (women born in the 1950’s who say they were not warned the retirement age was due to be raised), had a judicial review pending at the start of June. I haven’t heard the outcome, but maybe I can retire…. SOON.

My bed

What’s the oldest thing you own that you still use daily?

We bought our bed when my grandma died using a small bequest from her. That was a year after we moved into this house, and that was BEFORE we got married, so it’s over 25 years old.

It’s saggy, I have a folded up sheet on the bit where a spring is sticking out, and the divan drawers collapsed years ago. It’s a big bed and I don’t think it will ever go back down the stairs as we have had to have an extra handrail put on them as we have got older.

Half the time the fitted sheets don’t fit (it’s hard to find king size sheets round here). Tracey Emin would love our bed. It’s surrounded by books and book cases. The bedroom is too small, but we sleep in it because it’s away from the main road at the front of the house which is too noisy in the morning (we live opposite a noisy factory).

Most nights are uncomfortable, the bed is supported by an old A2 drawing board under part of it and the base is collapsing from old age. We can’t afford a new one. I think we should save money specially to buy one, but then we need new carpets and my curtains are being eaten by moths. But that’s life, we have clothes and food. You just have to manage. I have a lot of older things, but not in regular use.

My hubby, by the way, regularly rides an eighty year old tourer road bike. X

Watching the end of Close Encounters

UFOs

Describe one of your favorite moments.

I watched the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind when it first came out. It had been a wild adventure for the hero and heroine and it wasn’t clear what would finally happen. So it was joyful at the end when the moment came that the hero got to go on board the space ship. The music soared and so did it, glowing lights and a wild structure lifting up into the dark sky.

I felt so elated at the end. So happy, it had been an amazing film. It was mysterious, comedic, obsessive, intriguing, a real journey of discovery. That final moment was like the icing on the cake!

Steven Spielberg was the director and the film was great, no real violence, a lot of thought behind it, references to UFO mythology like a group of aircraft that had gone missing over the Bermuda triangle suddenly reappearing decades later. The sound track was amazing with the humans and aliens communicating with musical tones. The special effects were wonderful, beautiful, extravagant. But I still keep going back to the final moments. That’s what I remember, magical entertainment and a wonderful time,

Not much happened!
