I am generally cheerful

How would you describe yourself to someone who can’t see you?

Long hair going grey, slightly downturned mouth, squinting eyes. I think I could be classed as ordinary. One of the crowd, slightly chubby normal woman?

How would an AI portray me? It’s hard to say. My skin isn’t smooth and blemishless! I’ve been looking at the free image library here but sometimes it comes up with weird ideas I wrote about an old TV show earlier and the selection of images that came up were Cyclists?! A description of me would be vague, no real distinguishing features? A bit worn out.

I would add that my body isn’t beautiful, it’s a mismatch of shapes and sizes. Bits keep failing. I don’t think I would pass an MOT. I have a Midlands accent and a reasonable singing voice. That’s it!

I’m not conservative

What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

My family were traditionally conservatives. I was bought up to think that socialists were bad and would lead to serious problems for our country. But when I left home I started to see things in a different light. I had to look at how other people lived. There had been a lot of strikes, and people were struggling to survive. I found out things that had never been discussed at home. Thinking and listening to the words of John Lennons song Imagine really got to me. The struggle to manage when I was out of work for a short time. It made me realise how hard life can be for others.

My traditional upbringing included religion. The rules were set. Money had been important, but listening to Jesus teachings after I left home gave me more concerned belief that people deserved better. I became interested in equality for women, and I also supported charities that worked to save nature. I think leaving home gave me insights I would never have had before. It led to arguments with my parent, but I hope I changed her opinions too.

No

Was today typical?

No, it wasn’t, but not everyday is. A typical day for me would have been when I was at work. Now I do things for myself I can be running all over the place. Or sitting still.

I had to get this photo taken again because I had sent it off in the wrong format. The deadline was midnight. I had to go out to my studio to take the picture. But I’d hurt my foot (I’m using a walking stick). I had to find out the code for the doors in the ground floor of the studios so I could use the lift. Panicked email to the manager to arrange. I managed to get the photo done.

A friend rang asking for help, but I had to say no for once, I’m in too much pain and I had to prioritise. Then I couldn’t get the shopping done. Hubby came to my rescue. No it wasn’t a typical day…..

Short, artistic, old!

How would you describe yourself to someone?

I don’t have brown hair anymore, and it’s rather longer than this painted self portrait. I still wear glasses. I’ve been trying to loose weight and succeeded in dropping 35 kilos.

I am generally cheerful, despite old age creeping up and breaking bits of me. I mean if you see me across a crowded room I’ll probably be the one shaking and staggering a bit?

I’ve always been short. I knew people got taller as they grew older, so I was very disappointed when I stopped growing but other family members didn’t! I’ve always assumed myself to be ‘good’, and have been described as pleasant. But I got a stubborn streak from my mother and grandmother and I’m quite moral and believe we are all entitled to our rights and shouldn’t be pushed around.

And I try to be creative, I love art, invention, science, science fiction and cats, and as someone just said I’m a good artist!

Which Dino?

If you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?

I’d bring back a brachiosaurus. Basically because I think they were herbivores and relatively harmless… Unless it went for a walk along a motorway? The cars that could be crushed would be awful! But if I bought it back I would feel sorry for it as I doubt we could afford to create more than one. It would be left to grow old and dies alone. If we did create a partner, what would we do if they were to breed? How would it effect the lives of other land animals? Would they strip the land of food? Would they be allergic to modern plants? Too many questions!

Or I would bring back a swimming dinosaur and release it into Loch Ness in Scotland. Then there would be a real monster in the Loch. I image that would increase the tourism in the area.

I’d be interested to know how it could be done, apparently the method in Jurassic park of getting dinosaur DNA from a fly trapped in amber is not possible. Maybe reverse evolution, taking out genes to de-evolve an animal, perhaps a bird, back to one of its ancestors? But how would they choose the right genes? Interesting thought though, maybe they would end up with miniature pterasaurs?

Nowhere!

If you won two free plane tickets, where would you go?

I might donate them to a family that need hospital treatment abroad, but I won’t be using them!

I do not want to fly, or more accurately I don’t want to crash. So I make excuses, it’s not good for my carbon footprint, Also, who needs to travel thousands of miles? The majority of the world can be seen on screens.

I recently saw a marvellous cruise to Antarctica advertised on TV, presumably you have to fly to catch the ship. But why? The cost must be exorbitant. And what are we doing tramping around pristine environments! You see the world burning and you think I want to add to 5ue temperature? Nah! Not me!

Millions of people fly each year, but until we are able to harness solar energy to power them I think I’ll give it a miss. Does anyone remember the flight of the Gossamer Albatross? Look it up!

What nickname?

What’s the story behind your nickname?

I don’t have a nickname anymore. I used to have one, but I’ve forgotten it. I’ve changed as I’ve got older and only my hubby would use a nickname for me, and he stopped that a few years ago.

So when I was a child I was called nicknames by the school bullies. They took my surname and changed it to blueband (there was a margarine by that name) and used to shout it at me. I hated that. So I was pleased when I moved up to senior school and the bullying stopped.

As I say I had a nickname given me by my hubby, it was something silly, but I truly can’t remember it. So I guess I’ve answered and not answered the question.

Plus, what if I use my ex-nickname as a password for my computer, some of these questions rely on you being honest, but what if someone else reads it and uses the data? That’s a good question. Thankfully I’ve never used blueband as any kind or part of my passwords (plural), and now I’ve mentioned it I never will! Put that in your thesaurus and smoke it!

Some Yoga

What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

I’m not good at yoga, and I only do chair yoga once a week, but I think it helps me a bit mentally as well as physically. I can do standing poses and balances with the aid of a chair. I can’t get up and down from the floor, so sitting on the chair gives me support as I try and adapt the poses.

My physical problems make it hard to bend and twist without feeling dizzy, so I have to try and keep my balance and not over extend the positions I try and achieve. Problems with my arm mean I struggle to extend it. That’s why I like yoga, what we do is not competitive but collaborative. That too means a lot to me.

The yoga class happens before choir practice, and I’m sure that has a good impact on my mental health. Sometimes I don’t go because I’m not feeling well or feel down. But I’m trying to do the best I can. Life can be difficult so it’s worth trying to find something to do that helps.

Staying put!

What are your future travel plans?

Not flying! I’m scared to fly and it increases your carbon footprint.

Not driving! I’m careful because of health issues. I can still safely drive but I’m being very cautious and not going far…

Not cycling! I’m too old and unfit to cycle any more.. I wish I could…

Not riding on the train! They are too expensive, and the railways seem to have been reducing services recently. If I want to travel on one it would take a lot of planning and probably a lot of money. Plus you are not going to be able to buy tickets at a ticket office, they are being cut back.

Not going by boat! We are near to a local canal, but hiring a boat for a few days can be expensive too, and I think having to go through lock gates could be very difficult. Plus I think steering a 72 foot canal barge must be difficult.

Not by bus! The services are being cut so you can’t get back in the evening. One friend had to walk 9 miles to get home last week because he missed the last bus…. Before 7pm!

I will be walking… Not going very far as in not very fit. But I guess I’m OK with that. I don’t commute and shops are close. Holidays are too expensive so my travel plans this summer? A staycation !

Teach more art

What would you change about modern society?

So many schools seem to concentrate on “worthwhile” subjects, Sciences, Mathematics, English. The old fashioned three R’s reading, ‘righting and ‘rithmeric…

But we need creative thought as well as producing drones that do productive work.

If you learnt technical drawing you could design cars, create architecture, produce blue prints for engineering. Yes it’s all at the press of a button now, AI does so much, but artistic ability can help with innovation and ingenuity.

Art helped our understanding of medicine, Leonardo DaVinci undertook studies of anatomy that were well before other medicine caught up. Look at his drawings of dissections to understand his fantastic knowledge.

Art is in advertising, illustration, magazines, books, clothing, wallpaper design, surface pattern, product design, ceramics. That worthless degree that our government might close down could be the next big digital game, the shape of rotor blades that save energy for planes or wind turbines. Even a more readable font for someone who is dyslexic.

So art really should be a big part of modern society. Without it there would be no fashion, no special effects for TV and film, no beautiful make up for theatre or other creative productions.

Life is not just bean counting, it’s about passion and beauty. Otherwise we might as well all be clones, in grey jumpsuits, working 9 hours a day, sleeping when we are told and not attempting to be any different than anyone else.
