Cats make my heart melt

20181105_133340

How old was I when we first had a cat? 11 or 12 I think, we had two cats, a tortoise shell and a grey tabby. I remember loving them. One was a kitten and we had a settee which had four legs so it would run underneath and pounce on my ankles. I had to sit cross legged on the seat to avoid getting scratched!

I went to college and my friend had two kittens which we took to the vets and we saw an old cat there which was due to be euthanized.  we asked to take it in and looked after it for a year until it died of old age. That cat was Jinx and I did a lovely painting of him.

The following year we took in an adult female cat. She was very clever and liked to ride on my shoulders.  She had kittens and we kept two of them. Once their mum died they were our cats for many years. The female lived to 21. As they got old we took in another two strays, one of these would sit on the white line in the middle of the road,  waiting for me to come home. He was knocked over in an accident with a car and was put to sleep. The other cat we think was killed by antifreeze or another poison. I was very sad when that happened, but we were later persuaded to taken in two more cats. They lived long lives . Finally last year we took in a brother and sister cat. They love chasing each other around the house, up and down stairs. Having fun trying to catch water from the bath tap and jumping up on top of the cupboards in the kitchen. They are a little shy when new people visit but they are loved and give love. I could write more but I don’t want to bore you.

Working on them

One problem with being ill is that sometimes my energy levels are not good. I’m often tired, and if I get a cold like I have now I just feel washed out. I end up looking at  the canvas instead of painting it.

That being said I’ve promised to finish these two this week. They have come on well, but I think they will need daylight so that I can see the colours properly.

So I will take my time but work hard to finish them. Until I’m happy with them.

Dusty cats

I love ornaments, but have an aversion to dusting, hence all of my ceramic cats are rather dusty.

The more I collect the worse I get. I added up the number of cat ormaments I had once and gave up after 50. I’m afraid I like collecting “useless tat”. Maybe one day I could use them in an art work. Or more likely they will sit and continue to gather dust.

I think each of these cats is a depiction of a Egyptian goddess Bast? I may be wrong.

Catlick

I love the shapes cats make, even when they are having a wash…

Catlick, wash and brush up.

Preening and tidying,

Smoothing your fur..

Make yourself handsome,

Tidy your whiskers

Top to tail,,

Then your inner gymnast,

Turns you upside down,

Inside out,

Legs akimbo! (love those words).

Purrs escaping like a boiling kettle.

Shapes like a twister game.

You are my cat.

Beautiful and gleaming.

Gracie

She’s small, she’s bright,

She’s funny, she’s nice

Black and white,

Cool as ice.

Plays with toys

And catnip mice.

Grace’s has to run

And chases her brother,

Till she’s won.

Gives lots of purrs

And miaows for fun,

She’s my cat,

A cheeky one!

Not a very profound poem, just what I was thinking while looking at these photos of her.

Richards painting

DSC_0112

This is my partners painting of our old cat from about 30 years ago.

It’s oil paint on hardboard. He doesn’t paint but when we had this cat he decided to have a go. He also did a large painting of sunflowers at the same time. I love this , it’s up in our bedroom. When I wake up in the morning I remember her.

To anyone who thinks they can’t paint or draw I would say it doesn’t matter. This is a loving attempt at capturing a sweet cat. It’s the feeling behind this that matters and I love Richard for painting it.

Kittenhood

My sister has a new kitten. She took it in because the person who had it had too many pets. Anyway it’s an apricot tortoiseshell. She only found that out after a trip to the vets.

It is such a sweet kitten, very friendly apart from when it bites your fingers

I forgot the joy of having a kitten, there is something lovely about an animal befriending you. Trusting you to look after it. At the moment it’s asleep and all curled up. It’s been a busy day and I think it needs a rest. I wish I could keep it but that would not be fair.

There might be a possibility of painting it though. Need to get some nice clear photos.

What a beaut…

What a beautiful cat, so sweet so cute,

Sitting there on the counter top.

Let me just get my camera?

Where is it, oh over there..

Just a sec, gotta get the settings right,

It’s dark in here so,

400 iso I think…..

Better get the focus right.

Ok, almost ready,

Ah you are a cute cat,

Head rubs and purrs,

Now for the photo. .

Hold still…..

He’s gone….

Old painting

This was a painting I must have done in the summer of 1983 or 1984, soon after I finished college I think.

My friend had lots of cats so I did a portrait of her with them.

I wanted to do the painting but didn’t have any stretched canvases to hand so I got some linen canvas and stretched it over a horseshoe shaped chair back with an extra peice of wood nailed in place at the bottom.

The painting was in oils  This was before I started using acrylics. After it was finished I gave it to my friend.

A year or two ago it turned up. It had moved house with my friend and she had got it propped up in the kitchen when I visited one day. It was starting to deteriorate because it wasn’t proper canvas and had a couple of holes in it. Bearing in mind it had been painted about 34 years before I guess it has done well. I took photos of it and left.

Sadly the painting got damaged beyond repair when they moved again. But at least I have this photo and I did a small copy which another friend purchased.

It feels like I am letting children go when they go to new homes .You never know if they will survive. At least I know this one’s history.
