New paintings and regular art updates.

Sunset was Sundays #bandofsketchers prompt. As we arrived at our holiday destination one summer I was amazed to see what appeared to be a tall beam of sunshine above the setting sun. I found out later that it was a sun pillar. I think its a phenomenon where sunlight reflects off ice crystals in the sky? A bit like sun dogs. Can’t find the photo to work off so tried to remember it…

Gold felt pen doodle coloured in with more pens then filtered through photodirector. Made up of dashes, squiggles and dots. I do like playing with images. I tend to use the same filters quite frequently. I may try variations on a theme. I added the thorns afterwards. I decided to leave a white background rather than adding another colour to it. Felt pen sketch.

Tuesdays #bandofsketchers prompt was renaissance. Since the statue of David by Michealangelo has been in the news lately I thought I would try and draw his head. I really need to get some new felt pens or fish my watercolour paints out of wherever they are hiding.

Red admiral? Settled on a poppy flower. Internet image, couldn’t find the author. Hope it was OK to base my drawing on it. Sundays #bandofsketchers prompt was Settled. Felt pens again. I loved getting the bright reds and greens, a really jazzy contrast of complimentary colours.

Slightly late for Sundays #bandofsketchers prompt sour. My sour is really gentle, crab apples. You can add lots of sugar to calm them down and make crab apple jelly. Felt pen drawing, tried to make it a bit impressionistic.

The felt pens came out today for a drawing of the chimney at Middleport pottery. Stoke-on-Trent Urban Sketchers were out at various places around the factory grounds and across the other side of the Trent and Mersey canal.
It was a warm morning, and there were some brief glimpses of blue sky through the bold grey clouds. I could have drawn Middleports iconic bottle oven, but I wanted to sit down on a bench so I drew the chimney and the roofs instead.

I liked using layers of felt pen, I started with a pale blue pen to outline the buildings but then used black to indicate bricks and worked dark to light, with horizontal and little vertical lines to indicate the brickwork. I even used some silver pan for the sky because my grey pan has dried up. A lovely couple of hours spent in good company.

Tuesdays #bandofsketchers prompt was mushrooms. I drew Shaggy ink caps. Very recognisable. They look like drumsticks as they grow, the cap is tall rather than flat like a parasol. They have scales and they turn black at the base which gradually moves up the cap and makes them seem to melt back into the ground.

PNCO posted about the Australian Fairy Wren a few days ago and I decided to use the photo they posted as the subject for Sundays prompt pretty. I finally got round to doing this today. Sunday seems a long time ago. Still got to catch up on Tuesdays and today’s prompts. Felt pen drawing.

Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was white. I could have done snow, but by the time I’d seen the prompt it had mainly melted. Its supposed to come back but I just decided to imagine a white ball of string.
