I love clouds so when I saw these on Saturday I had to take a photo. I loved that they were lined up diagonally. I think they are cumulusclouds. I ought to check the cloud appreciation society page on Facebook but I thought I’d post it here first. November is near and grey skies abound, so it was good to see a little daylight for a change.

I tried to look up what these clouds might be so I checked Wikipedia. I thought they were castellated cumulus, but now I think they are Altocumulus_castellanus_cloud.

The clouds in the photo are a bit more broken up than these but they do seem to have a sort of towering effect. Anyway there are so many cloud types and shapes, and new types are being identified, like Asperatus. Can you tell I like clouds?

The sky was stunning tonight, layers of cloud with light escaping from behind them. Reds, yellows, oranges, purples and some blues. Silhouettes of trees and buildings and the fencing around the Croft at Thistley Hough.
Ou could even see wisps of snow or rain falling from the clouds but not reaching the ground.
Taken about 9.45 pm tonight….
Seen this evening on a walk

One thing I always look up at is the sky, and when the clouds are like this I love to take photos of them. I recently got the ‘cloud spotters guide’ from the cloud appreciation society so maybe I can work out which types they are.

If you are bored, look up. You may be surprised at what you see. Clouds can be unicorns or dragons, fish or faces.
When I was young I would lie on my back and look up at the sky. Watching the clouds rush with rapidity or drift with stately slowness. Like the galleons I drew in my school exercise books. Then it was pirates racing to catch treasure ships.
Thunder clouds were mountains, or giant anvils, sometimes clouds looked like waves on the sea, or hills and beaches.
I gradually learnt a few of the names of clouds, cirrus, cumulo nimbus, stratus. Each had a wonderful ring to them. Magical beauty flying high over head.
Later I learned a bit about chaos theory, and fractals. How if you magnify a bit of a cloud, the close up looks like the larger image. I heard songs like Cloudbusting by Kate Bush, and about clouds being seeded to make rain fall.
You see they are interesting creatures, even if they are not mythical beasts.
So, if you are interested, look up the cloud appreciation society. They have a page on Facebook. Their founder set up a group which people can join. They have a cloud of the month, and sometimes send out a newsletter.
With climate change, and the increase in severity of the weather, its interesting to find out how water vapour can be so beautiful and yet so wild.
