Cricket

Have you heard of cricket?

It’s a long game…

Two teams hit a ball.

Try to knock it over the boundary.

Two players run between stumps

On the playing surface

Between the two wickets.

A bowler bowls a ball fast or slow

Seamers, googlies, bouncers, catches.

The bowler tries to hit the wicket

Two short bales lie on top of three stumps.

That’s the wicket.

Hit the bales and knock them off?

Or knock over the stumps

Player is out.

11 players to a side

Two play

10 field

1 bowls

Collect runs to win.

1 point running between stumps

4 if the ball rolls to boundaries.

6 if the ball flies out over the boundary.

That’s cricket in a nutshell..

Highest score wins

Don’t get your leg before wicket…

It’s a very big nutshell…

Can’t watch!

I started watching the paralympics tennis and our man was loosing. I tried ignoring it and he started to win. Now I’m caught between wanting to watch and see who wins and not watching so I don’t jinx it!

It’s odd to feel I have any influence over the outcome. But listening to the game seems OK? Very strange. I’ve had this happen in other situations. The football world Cup was on, I watched, we lost. So I’d rather not watch and allow others to see the result no matter what happens!

Esther Chiltons prompt “Sport”

Sport in Botany defined by Wikipedia :

In botany, a sport or bud sport, traditionally called lusus,[2] is a part of a plant that shows morphological differences from the rest of the plant. Sports may differ by foliage shape or color, flowers, fruit, or branch structure. The cause is generally thought to be a chance genetic mutation.[3]

I saw a sport once. Eight or nine twigs on a forsythia bush, each fused to the next, like a pan pipe. It still had leaves and flowers. I was reading sci-fi books at the time, I was only young and found the strange formation almost creepy. I cut the sport off the bush and it never grew back. But I always remembered this sporting image!

Athletics

What Olympic sports do you enjoy watching the most?

I actually like a lot of the sports in the Olympics, and that includes some of the newer sports such as mountain biking and climbing. But I guess my favourites are track and field events (including para athletics). I think that’s because I grew up watching people like Mary Peters and Sebastian Coe among others. So often you would see people beating World and Olympic records. My only regret was when they may have been found to be cheating. Using drugs to enhance their performances. Also I think more modern athletics has too much hype. I know the athletes need to fund their careers, but I liked the simpler times. One of my favourite films is Chariots of Fire. Where athletes were far more moral and honest than some of them appear to be now, or maybe that’s just my perception?

Watching Wimbledon

I mustn’t watch. The players I support seem to lose when I watch them! If I listen its OK, but if I see the shots… Well it’s something that seems to happen. I have my favourite tennis players, but I’m not obsessed with the game. I wouldn’t go and watch it live.

Wimbledon is the epitome of summer in the UK. Strawberries and cream at exorbitant prices. At least one day of heavy rain which ‘stops play’, injury and tantrums. I still remember watching the McEnroe game where he shouted at the umpire ‘you cannot be serious’ when a shot of his was deemed to be ‘out’ (outside the playing area) and he had lost a point ( game/set/match)?

I saw Andy Murray win a few years ago, so I can’t really be jinxing them. But although I love the game I do have things to do!

PS, both the people I watched lost!

Bog snorkeling

sketch-1572304717609

What is this?

Looking at Wikipedia I quote:

“Bog snorkelling is a sporting event in which competitors complete, in the shortest time possible, two consecutive lengths of a water-filled trench cut through a peat bog. Competitors must wear snorkels and flippers and complete the course without using conventional swimming  strokes, relying on flipper power alone. A wetsuit is not compulsory, but is often worn.”

I only looked this up because there is a channel identity thing for BBC1 which has bog snorkeling in it. Not having heard of it before, and not knowing that it was a sport I was fascinated by the idea. Its odd what humans get up to. Apparently it’s held in Wales, Ireland, Sweden and Australia?

Tennis final

Djokovic v Federer, Wimbledon men’s final, can’t watch, so I’m typing this instead, they are in a tie break at twelve games all in the fifth set. The score is two sets all, twelve games all and 4-1 to Djokovic in the last game. Its nail-biting stuff. My hubby keeps talking bout various things in the past so I can’t concentrate……. My heart is racing… Now its 4-3 to Djokovic…. I need to sit in a darkened room….
