Star Trek the original series

What movies or TV series have you watched more than 5 times?

I couldn’t find a photo of Mr Spock from the original Star Trek series. He was my favourite character when I first saw the series as a child. I liked his logical brain and was always shocked if he smiled or laughed.

There were not many series of the show but I watch them as often as I can. I love the tribble episode and the way they reacted when faced with a klingon spy. There were surreal moments with the crew transported to the OK Corral. Or to a modern day version of Rome, or Greek mythology.

I just keep going back to its strong feelings about equality of women and different races and the feeling of humanity and empathy that was embedded deep within the stories. I went on to watch the movies, then the Next Generation series, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Star Trek Enterprise. To be honest I’ve watched all of them repeatedly. They cheer me up! And I’ve watched the newer films too. I can’t see some of the newer series because I don’t have pay per view, but if they come into freeview I will definitely watch them!

Being logical?

What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

I like being logical and working things out. I’ve always been good at guessing who the murderer is in films and programmes like Miss Marple (you can tell from this I’m probably not young). I also enjoy trying to work out who is the criminal in novels like the Brother Cadfael Mysterys by Ellis Peters.

I’m interested in medical mysteries and I like working out what problems people have with their eyes for instance . You can tell by looking at how big their eyes look behind their glasses (bigger eyes-longsighted, smaller eyes-short sighted). So I was fascinated by the TV series House, and also the Mentalist.

I love Spock in Star Trek and have generally tried to be less emotional, but lately that has been hard to maintain. Even so my hubby calls me Captain Sensible!

Sometimes I overdo it. I’ve suddenly felt the need to pack my shopping bags precisely. Is this too controlling? I think I’m trying to control the uncontrollable, which is really illogical!

I’m interested in science and would love to have more knowledge. I enjoy learning and finding out things. So yes, this is my favourite thing about myself, which actually surprised me, because I thought I would have said art and creativity. But those are imprinted on my DNA. Knowledge though, intruiges me, and makes me want to find out more.

When I was a child I decided to be logical…. Because I saw the character of Spock on TV in a Star Trek and he gave me a love of science and knowledge.

I also think it triggered a love of astronomy together with watching the Sky at Night TV programme (although I never drew Sir Patrick Moore).

All that interest in the world sparked by a science fiction character..

Kirk and Spock

My favourite sci-fi characters. Captain Kirk and First Officer Spock from the 1960’s TV show ‘Star Trek’. I drew this at a website called Sketchfu which closed a few years ago. Even with the simple tools there I was able to draw them reasonably accurately. There were not that many episodes made and it only ran for three series. But it came back a few years later with follow up films and TV series. The franchise must have made a great deal of money for its backers x.

A few years ago I was on a website called Sketchfu which eventually closed

It had very simple tools to draw with but I enjoyed drawing all sorts of portraits, including Lord of the Rings characters. I put a lot of them on here a year ago. But my favourite is Spock from the original Star Trek series. He was not easy to draw but I think I got a good representation. The little pink face in the background was the icon for Sketchfu. I do miss it. It was a great site but it was difficult to communicate with the site owners even though I was a Moderator on there. I can’t believe how long it is since it closed.

Live long and prosper

One of my favourite sayings, even though it comes from a Sci fi series. When I was a child I learnt to do the sign that Spock uses, fingers seperate between middle and ring finger. Spock was my favourite character because of his logic. I also likes Sherlock Holmes for the same reason. I don’t know why logic appeals to me but I do.

Logic and science is denigrated too much these days. Instead of seeing how important it is people turn their backs on it. For instance the turning against vaccination by people and the consequent increase in cases of measles. Or the fake news and lies used to stop people realising that climate change is really happening. Logic tells us that if we see evidence of something we must take account of it. People’s lives are at stake.

Live long and prosper, bur stay safe and care for each other too.
