Wooden

Sliced wood. How do you make a veneer for furniture? Cut through a slice of wood four times, glue it onto some backing wood  like pine and add three more pieces rotated so the result is a symmetrical pattern.

This is what my grandfather, who was a carpenter, did for my mom and dad as a wedding present. He gave them two wardrobes, one large and the other smaller. He used a carcass of probably elm or beech and then used Walnut, polished and stained to a dark glossy finish. They were beautiful. As a child I used to go and look at them. The pattern and colour enthralled me.

Prompt ‘wood’

Our prompt from band of sketchers today was wood, so instead of drawing some brown furniture I decide to draw the trees outside including a pear tree, buddliea, pine tree and other trees, lots of wood. Our garden is a thicket! I hope you can see it OK, lots of leaves. The pears on the tree are growing larger every day. X

I saw a face in the wood.

Literally!

I was looking at some pine wall cladding and saw this. I know it’s my imagination, but it does look like a face doesn’t it? Especially the brown eye side….

Looks like a sad Ent, hoom, hoom…. He’s waiting to go to his Ent-moot (see Lord of the Rings book). Don’t be sad little Ent!
