Bibendum is the name of the iconic symbol for Michelin tyres. There was a large factory near us run by Michelin. Sadly the factory has mostly closed now, its mostly a training facility. The one improvement is that the smell of vulcanising rubber no longer hangs over the city. Like many of the factories and manufacturing in Stoke-on-Trent the jobs have gone. Potteries have been badly affected. Steel manufacturers have gone and other jobs like coal mining went in the 1980’s. Northern areas of the United Kingdom have been badly affected over the years of the late twentieth century and twenty first.
This is the cat sculpture my friend from Sculpted Steel made for me from a sketch I drew. It’s lovely and she just shared her photo for international cat day. It cost quite a bit but it was worth every penny. It now lives in my garden with plants growing through and round it. I am very grateful to my friend for creating it for me. She is a brilliant blacksmith.
Bars of clouds ascend on high.
Coloured lights paint the sky
How I wish I could return,
to that land of woods and fern.
and valleys deep,
Singers from the Mines and Steel.
Workers with their hands and feet
Love their land through wake and sleep.
I can only look from far
Wishing always to be there.
Welsh by ancestors alone,
Looking cross the border land
Perhaps one day I will lie
Between the earth and cloud barred sky.
