Old willow tree

Old willow tree

Standing tall

Your long thin leaves

Now wave and fall

From green to gold

And yellow hue

Fluttering against

A sky of blue.

Then wind blows strong

Storm comes along

Your leaves are shredded

And stripped

To lie among

The fallen mulch

For slugs and snails

To munch!

Across the tracks

The trees had changed

The wind did blow

Leaves on the line

Stopped the train

No steam appears

On time or later

When fallen leaves

Cause a layer

Of mulched and damp

Leaf shaped litter.

One yellow leaf, fallen

Sitting with weeds and grass

Old brown leaves

Already over.

Leaves that turn to mulch

Rotting

Nutrients

Sinking

Into the ground

To renew next year

Feed the roots

To grow new shoots

After winters sleep.
