Nostalgia

25 years ago I treated myself to the BBC radio version of the Lord of the Rings. I had heard it weekly on a Sunday afternoon and there were 13 episodes.

I loved it, it starred Ian Holme as Frodo, Michael Horden as Gandalf, and Bill Nye as Sam Gamgee. The production was magical and the backing music was so evocative. You could see the tale unfold in your minds eye without needing pictures. Elves and Dwarfs and Hobbits and Wizards in a great battling adventure with a bit of humour added.

We decided to listen to it in a marathon playing over one weekend. 6 hours on the first day, and 7 on the second. With gaps for meals and coffee breaks. I think it was my favourite ever purchase. My cassette player  no longer works, but I want to hear it again.

Frodo

Another one of my digital drawings that I did on the Sketchfu website (closed a few years ago). This was Frodo and his sword Sting. I’m re-reading the Lord of the Rings and they have just come through Moria where Gandalf falls into an abyss with the Balrog. Reading a book is different to seeing a film, the story is visualised by you, not by a digital animator. Frodo looks like your imagined hobbit, not someone acting him. That said I did like this actor, Elijah Wood, but I also liked Ian Holm who played him in the BBC radio series.

Aragorn

One of my old digital drawings on a now defunct website called Sketchfu. I drew it when the Lord of the Rings came out. I have forgotten the actor who played him although I know Orlando Bloom played Legolas. I know the actor also played a long distance horse rider in a film about a horse that races over the Sahara. The horse wasn’t pure blood but one of Americas wild mustang horses. I can’t remember the film name! My memory is getting full of holes….

Under the willows, a book review.

I’m just re-reading the Lord of the Rings and have enjoyed the first few chapters. I’d forgotten the bit where (spoiler alert) Frodo and his friends travel through the Old Forest on the borders of the Shire. They are pulled off course by the lie of the land and end up on the banks of the Wythewindle stream. They feel increasingly sleepy and three of them rest next to an old willow tree. This is Old Man Willow, master tree of the forest. It traps two of them inside its trunk and Frodo under a tree root forcing him face down into the river. It is only because Sam Gamgee his faithful friend and servant runs off calling for help that Tom Bombadil, an ancient guardian of the forest, finds them as he arrives rhyming and singing, and rescues them. He is a powerful figure in this part of the book, (Book 1), before the Hobbits get into the more dark and complex parts of the story. Later in the same section he saves them again from further frightening events.

In the films of the book this section of the story was left out. Its a shame in a way, it may have been removed to shorten the story, but it makes the book feel like it is for a slightly younger audience, that feeling of innocent adventure that reminds you of the Narnia stories or Swallows and Amazons. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books.

LOTR drawing

Frodo, drawn on a website called sketchfu a few years ago.

I liked it because it had simple tools to draw with, but you could get reasonable results. Unfortunately it was closed down a few years ago. I think the owners were overwhelmed by the amount of chat on it, the art started to become secondary to people writing fan fiction and stories, the site was getting full and they couldn’t afford to extend it. Then they started up a new site called Muzy and Sketchfu seemed to be forgotten. In the end I managed to save a lot of my drawings before the whole thing was closed down. It was very sad, a lot of people lost a lot of art that they had spent a lot of time over.

I love the LOTR

A drawing of Aragorn I did about ten years ago at a website called sketchfu. I loved drawing there. I miss it. But it closed. I really want to find a simple drawing application that I can do this kind of thing in again. Any suggestions? Everything these days seems to be on Google play. But that’s not how I want to draw. Yes I’m moaning about this again. I did a couple of months ago I think. I just want something where I can get the freedom to do what I want to do. Even if it is just drawing portraits of my favourite stars!

Moan over.

LOTR drawings

About ten years ago I was doing a lot of drawings at sketchfu. I did a series of drawings there of the Lord of the Rings characters. These are three of them. I also drew one of Gandalf, but I can’t find it on my camera roll.

Digital portraits. I’m hoping when I get a new wacom tablet I will be able to do more art like this.

Still struggling with the online course I’m doing, I’ve had a few problems today. I had to download a fix for something and ended up in a mess. I sorted it out but it cost me time to download what I needed. If only computers were simple.

I saw a face in the wood.

Literally!

I was looking at some pine wall cladding and saw this. I know it’s my imagination, but it does look like a face doesn’t it? Especially the brown eye side….

Looks like a sad Ent, hoom, hoom…. He’s waiting to go to his Ent-moot (see Lord of the Rings book). Don’t be sad little Ent!
