Better go to bed

Better go to bed

I said

As sleep fell in my head.

Better try and sleep

And count some sheep..

Better lie down and rest,

Sleep time is the best..

Try and grab eight hours

Not wake as dawn flowers

Pink sky all lit up

My mind ready to wake up.

My world ready to break up

My life already shattered

Sleep is what mattered.

So better go to bed,

Before night has fled.

Sleep, circadian rhythms….

Dear Agony Aunt,

My sleep patterns have stayed the same for twenty years. Staying up late was to do with being awake when my husband got in from work around 1am. I would then have to get up for work in the morning so was always tired. He could sleep in later as he was on a permanent “noon” shift. Now however he goes to bed a lot earlier than me. If I go to bed early I have to read to relax and then I can nod off. He, on the other hand, must be in a different time zone to me. He goes to bed if I have to go out in the evening. The last two nights when I got in he was in bed by 9.30pm.

Great you say. But then he woke up at 2am as I was coming to bed and we ended up chatting till 4am. It was getting light.

So Dear Agony Aunt, what do I do? Eschew grown up bedtimes and go to bed early. This would have the effect of trying to get us back in sync, but I would have to miss late night TV and news. Or should I just go to bed when I want, which would at least prevent me lying in bed trying to get to sleep for hours. I’m hoping this is a phase. My hubby is getting older but he lives on nervous energy, he’s always moving and talking in the day, and it’s like his batteries have drained in the evening. Maybe I should make him strong coffee….

Sleeping cat

When I got up this morning one of my cats was sleeping on my chair. I stood and watched him for ten minutes till he woke up. He saw me standing there and gave me a look as if to say “no chance” so I went back to bed for an hour! Cats have such a personality for small animals. I find myself constantly talking a sort of baby talk to them! Making up different names and stringing together noises they might like. In fact I begin to think they are alien invaders who have us in their thrall. Until of course I get fed up and pick him up and move him!

With one of the cats, it’s 2am and I’m still not sleepy. Just had a decaff coffee and a yoghurt because we had our evening meal 8 hours ago and I’m more than a little peckish.

I keep thinking I will go to bed early. Like in that old saying about ” early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise”. I guess I’m none of those. I will go up in a bit..  .. All this started over a year ago when my partner had his new (then) motorbike stolen. We tracked it down and got it back (now there’s a funny story) but ever since I have listened out most nights to the traffic and footsteps of people passing. Its not good for me I know. So here I am again (starting a sentence with so) (but that was OK in the sound of music?) … Anyway. Its dark and I find now I do actually want to sleep. Perhaps I have bored myself to sleep!

Goodnight x
