Apollo missions

I have been reading a lot about the Apollo space missions recently on Facebook, but so many people laugh and post that the photos are faked. I really hate this attitude and posted this comment to respond to the ridicule :

On all these posts there are idiots laughing at the achievement of the Apollo missions and Astronauts. They were ground breaking and reliant on the brilliance of thousands of people across the globe. By calling this fake you are denigrating their bravery, knowledge and hard work.
By laughing you are telling people that you don’t believe in science and intelligence. By laughing you are pushing the narrative that stupidity and dumbing down are good for humans, when the opposite is true. People need education to keep solving insurmountable problems. Give credit is where it is due instead of disrespect.

Moonlight memories

The Moon will be eclipsed by the Earth tomorrow morning and there will be a blood (red) moon due. That means that as the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon the light rays from the Sun are refracted by Earth’s atmosphere. Blue light is scattered more but red light continues towards the Moon and illuminates it. (in a similar way that at sunset the sky can turn red).

Moonlight has been important in my life, from the Moon landings from 1969 and seeing it in its various phases. I remember being in my bedroom sitting on my bedroom window ledge as a child and reading books by moonlight. I loved being able to read even though we had to turn the lights out. I used to enjoy it.

Green eyes

Drawing and doodling, I had fun dig this, just playing with layers in my Artrage app. The Green eyes give her a spooky look. I imagine this woman as some mythological person. Perhaps Cassandra who Wikipedia states:

Cassandra or Kassandra in Greek mythology was a Trojan priestess dedicated to the god Apollo and fated by him to utter true prophecies but never to be believed. In modern usage her name is employed as a rhetorical device to indicate a person whose accurate prophecies, generally of impending disaster, are not believed. Wikipedia

I was interested in Greek and Roman mythology when I was a child. I think I read about Cassandra then.

Feeding the Maw

I just remembered this word ‘Maw’, it sometimes feels like social media is a voracious maw, gulping down tons of information and generating a lot of waste or rubbish alongside useful information.

Take the moon landing for instance. There are people today who think it didn’t happen. Some of those people were not born when it happened.

I remember being allowed to stay up to watch it. The grainy pictures, the slow step of Neil Armstrong off the lander. Later visits where other astronauts drove the lunar rover. And bouncing across the surface and one of them tripping over slowly in the 1/6th gravity of the Moon.

Talking about Maws, I remember a Star Trek episode where a giant world eating machine threatens to engulf the Enterprise. Somehow they defeat the monstrous killer.

So why write about Maws? I guess it’s because I keep blogging here. I feel like I’m feeding an insatiable need. Perhaps what I churn out is rubbish? You decide X

Watching Apollo 13

One of my favourite space films. Up there with the Sci-Fi classic 2001 a Space Odyssey.

In this case the film is based on the ill fated flight of Apollo 13. The crew of three were on the way to the moon when one of their oxygen tanks burst when it was stirred. They were left 3/4 of the way to the moon with a shortage of air to breathe. They had to work out how to navigate the space ship, work out how to clear the CO2 that was poisoning their air, work out how to use the equipment with almost no battery power and successfully splash down on the Earth. It was only on the way back that they saw the damage to their service module that they saw the damage and whether the heat shield that protected them from friction from the atmosphere would work.

I guess it’s on because of the 50th anniversary of landing on the moon. Very good film.
