I don’t mind spiders, snakes or bugs
Sometimes I like to give them hugs.
At Halloween I feel quite itchy
When creepy crawlies make me twitchy.
Arachnophobia, I hear you say?
But give those bugs another day.
They eat up flies, or rotting veg
You find around the gardens edge.
This silly poem now must end
A witches cauldron, over it I bend.
When I was little we had a talk at school about snakes and reptiles. At the end the person giving the talk gave us a chance to hold a snake. A lot of the girls were scared, they thought they would be slimy and cold. I don’t think I was scared so I put my hand up and got called forward. I ended up with a snake wrapping itself round my arm. The scales were dry and shiny and beautifully patterned. It was so interesting that a few years later I was at a nature display and held a six or eight foot long python across my shoulders. I also went to an open day a few years ago and held this snake (well it wrapped itself round me). I’ve also found that I quite like tarantulas. I would not have either as a pet, but I do think taking a look at things like this isn’t as scary as it looks, as long as they are not venomous!
Today’s #bandofsketchers prompt was power. I had to read my meter and disturbed a few spiders so I drew it. Its old and I’m trying not to use much power the way prices are going up!
Now the winter is starting there are less of these about. Spiders are probably finding quiet corners to hibernate. So what to do….? Spiders catch all sorts of creepy crawlies, keeping pests down without using pesticides and insecticides. Hopefully your garden finds a balance.
Recently we found frogs in the garden. They eat slugs and insects.
The only other incomers are a couple of squirrels but they do like digging up spring bulbs and planting walnuts and pinching bird food. But they are lovely so I wouldn’t do anything about them!
Someone said its spider mating season
It’s webby in the summerhouse
It’s webby in the shed
There’s more silk than a silk kimono
Slung along the hedge.
The spiders spin such grand big webs
They catch the birds on high
They set great traps for insects,
And grab them from the sky!
A huge big spider
Came to visit
And stayed for a year
Now its little offspring
Are always very near!
