Light

What a strange thing light is. It gets into corners, shines brightly and illuminates. You can see it at a distance even if it’s millions or billions of miles away. It might be made up of packets of energy (photons) or waves. It has different wavelengths for different colours and is part of the electromagnetic spectrum. It moves at the speed of light in a vacuum. But slower in an atmosphere or travelling through another medium like water or glass. It can be refracted (bent) depending on the wavelength which is why Sir Issac Newton found it was made up of a spectrum of rainbow colours when he passed a beam of daylight through a prism in a darkened room.

Apart from the scientific details which I only have a sketchy knowledge of, there are lots of phrases that are used in English :

Shed a light on it, light of my life, light at the end of the tunnel, thunder and lightning, the light fantastic, by the light of the stars.

Light is a fascinating subject.

Light

What is light? It’s photons that are little packets of visible energy. They don’t weigh anything, they are quanta (a tiny quantity). There have been different ideas about light, whether it is made up of waves or particles (called a wave particle duality). Probably the most interesting physicist to read is Richard Feynman, he died several years ago. But his book QED, quantum electro dynamics was quite good in helping me understand it slightly (its too complex for me). I liked his diagrams which helped to visualise the ideas….. Anyway that’s another random thing I’m interested in…

Fireworks

Sodium nitrate, sulphur and carbon. Mixed together make gun powder. That is the explosive mixture they put into fireworks. The ratios of the different elements determine the burning characteristics. Strontium makes red, sodium yellow, copper green, magnesium bright white, other elements make different colours. Cobalt? Possibly blue. The elements burn at different temperatures. Each element, when heated, excites electrons in its atoms. As they cool down again photons of light are given out (emitted). The colour depends on the energy the photons release. Bear with me it gets complicated! In the same way you can tell what elements are in the sun or other celestial objects by their emission lines. If you look at a spectrum (rainbow of colours), given out by the light of the sun there are gaps, these correspond to gases like Hydrogen and Helium.

I don’t know enough science to explain properly.

Anyway the fireworks have stopped so I might go to bed.

Megha’s world Tuesday writing prompt “light”

I wrote this poem in response to the prompt “light”. I am not sure how to do ping backs so I will put a link of it on Megha’s page. I am not sure if I’m doing it right. Anyway here is the poem:

Photons, floating through space

At breakneck speed.

Tinier than

The tiniest seed…

Particles or waves

Does anyone know?

It took scientists like Einstein

To try and show

That light is a constant

But only in space

In air it actually

Slows its pace

(slightly)

It pings and zings

It refracts and glows

Holograms shimmer

Insubstantial as mist.

Light is strengthened

and made to Lase

A coherent beam

That can burn and amaze

Light is part of the greatest equation

E=MC2 bright burst

radiation.
