Mevagissey watercolour

I had a lovely surprise this morning, a message from a lady who I had done a painting for, for their wedding present. It was a commission for her and her husband by her neighbour who I used to work with. It’s dated 1996.

Mevagissey is in Cornwall in the South West of England. We drove down to it on a day trip one summer.

It’s a long time ago and sadly I don’t remember painting it, but it’s got my signature on it and is dated, so it’s definitely mine. I used to like painting landscapes like this, the detail is such a challenge, getting it accurate. I doubt I could do it now.

The lady says she still has it on display and it’s admired by her friends. Not bad for thirty years ago! It’s so good to know my work is appreciated.

Look up Whitby steps on the Internet and you find out there are 199 steps from the town up to Whitby Abbey at the top. Dracula by Bram Stoker was set there. The town has many tourists visiting because of this. There is also a history of jewellery making in the town because it is the home of Whitby Jet. This is a black, fossilised substance that was originally ancient monkey puzzle trees. The steps or stairs offer a spectacular view down over the harbour and bay.

Sea painting

Watercolour sketch, I think it was in Cornwall or Devon, one day we’d gone down to a harbour and I used to take watercolours and sketch pads with me on our visits. Sometimes I left them at our holiday let’s as a gift to say thank you for a lovely time.

The geology of Devon and Cornwall includes dark craggy rocks which is why I recognise the area.

Sea of sleep

Storm tossed in my duvet

Slipping beneath waves of sleep,

Sometimes floating

Or clawing back to the surface.

Submerged in dreams

And in my galleon

Surrounded by dolphins

I finally wake

In the safe port

In the harbour,

Of bed…
