The English Women’s football team

Name the professional athletes you respect the most and why.

Lucy Bronze is one of the names that springs to mind. She was one of the English Women’s football team who won the European Football cup in 2022 and we’re runners up to Spain in the World Cup final this year.

I’m not fully aware of the whole team, but I did actually watch their games which is unheard of for me. I guess it’s because it’s so unusual to see women’s football being promoted. Up until a few years ago there was very little coverage. At one time in the past in the 1930’s I think there were huge league matches that could be compared with their male counterparts but then women’s football was banned here!

It was only when the film ‘Bend it like Beckham’ came out in the 1990’s. It was about an Asian girl wanting to play football and all the problems she had getting her family to accept that she could do it. It was a brilliant film. I’m sure some of the professional women football players who took part in the recent competitions were encouraged and spurred on by that film.

As I say I’m not very sport orientated but I also admire the tenacity of professional Cyclists. Today is the last day of the Tour of Britain cycle race which will be held in south Wales. Wout van Aert is only leading by 3 seconds after a week of intense racing. There is a slim chance he might be beaten. I will be watching.

Next doors TV.

I wish I lived in a detached house, not one with thin walls and a neighbour who’s TV is right next to the wall. We don’t complain because he is deaf and I think he would struggle to hear if he moved it anywhere else. Also you don’t want to fall out with your neighbours if you can help it. Most of the time it’s OK, especially when we have our TV on, but sometimes we like to read in silence and then, well if there is a football match on next door the volume is so high that we can tell when someone scores a goal!

I think the volume next door has gradually increased over a few years. You get used to it. But late at night it can also be disturbing. I don’t think there is a solution unless we have noise lowering insulation put in.

I don’t like football

No point in pretending

That I love the game

I understand the offside rule

I can explain it

But why should I?

I admired England’s Women

Playing in the European Cup

That was refreshing.

But Premier league?

Expensive, over hyped, boring,

Is my opinion.

And the World Cup venue?

Inequality and slave labour?

A Man’s paradise

Where women are second class

Rainbows are rebuked

Sports washing is preventing

Real freedoms.

Enough said.

Football

The finals of the Euros is happening and our town is like a ghost town. I snuck a look on line and currently it’s England 1, Italy 1 in the final of the European Cup.

It’s extra time and it’s hard ignoring it. There were roars and cheers outside over an hour ago, then nothing. How can our lives be invested in such a trivial thing? It feels like a tournament in medieval times, a gladiator contest.

So I’m keeping my head down, watching the catch up episode of the Handmaid’s tale by Margaret Attwood and thinking what a strange world this is.

Yes I hate football

Football ⚽

Used to like it, the beautiful game. The skills, the athleticism, the ability. But I got fed up with it. The prices players are bought and sold for. The money they earn. I hate the way some teams can receive millions of pounds in TV rights, while the bottom clubs languish and are often running out of money.

The other thing I dislike is the way the fans act. They can be so antagonistic, fighting and getting drunk. The rivalry can turn into violence. I don’t think there is any need for it. There is too much racism too.

I hope that things will go OK tonight. That’s when England play against Denmark. May the best team win.
