View from Cheddleton

Watercolour I did several years ago at the end of Cheddleton Station platform looking towards (eventually) Froghall wharf.

In the other direction the train line extends half a mile or so before ending abruptly neat the Cheddleton to Leek main road. The train line itself used to continue to Leek before travelling on to Stoke-on-Trent.

The line is starting to be rebuilt towards Leek! It’s exciting news that has been long awaited.

To find out more look up the Churnet Valley railway on the Internet.

Exterminate!?

One day a few years ago we visited the Churnet valley railway. We got on at Cheddleton and traveled to Froghall  wharf. We didn’t realise but there was a Dr Who dalek at the station, plus a tardis! We stopped for coffee and cake and watched as the remote control dalek trundled up and down the platform while people took photos and videos.

I’ve been watching Dr Who on TV since it started in the 1960’s. I used to hide behind the settee when the cyber men came on. I still watch when it’s on now.

The Churnet Valley railway is based on a line which runs between Cheddleton and Froghall, also running towards Leek in the Staffordshire moorlands. Plans are being worked on to extend the line towards Leek and possibly Stoke as the track bed is mainly still in situ except where they built a supermarket in Leek on top pf the track.

Train time

Watercolour painting of the top half of Cheddleton Station near Leek in Staffordshire. I have travelled on the steam train from there several times with my hubby. Something I will really miss. He was a bit of a steam train fanatic and always had masses of information in his mind. He recognised the make and types of trains (and tractors and cars) he could tell the make of tractors by the colours they were painted. Old Fergus on tractors were grey ‘old grey Fergie’ he would say.

Singing trip

We are just back from a day out to the Black lion at Consall forge near Cheddleton, Staffordshire. It was a singing social. A group from our choir decided to take a minibus and just enjoy the day. We saw the steam train that runs through the valley, people kayaking on the river next to the railway. Walked over the canal that also runs along the valley below the pub and lots of singing, under a gazebo at the pub and also in the minibus. More photos to follow, but I had a bad night’s sleep again, so I’m going to have a nap!

Cards for sale

A mixture of my cards for sale at Etruria Industrial Museum. Mostly green men and sea women, but with a card based on a painting of Cheddleton Station building near Leek, Staffordshire, England. I painted it in 2000, I think. I still have the original.

I have a lot of paintings that I never sold. I’m not a sales person and I don’t think I ever will be. I’m more interested in the process and result than selling art afterwards. I worry my family will be burdened with my art when I die!

Dalek on a train?

IMG_20190312_234527_883

A few years ago we went on a train trip at Cheddleton in Staffordshire from Cheddleton Station to Froghall Wharf along the Churnet Valley line (a preserved narrow gauge railway.

At the Cheddleton end of the line were vintage second world war cars and vehicles and people dressed in vintage clothes. Then at the other end? A Dalek from the Sci fi show Dr Who, plus a tardis and other memorabilia. To see a remote control Dalek trundling up and down the station platform made me so happy. I’ve pretty much watched the show since the 1960s. Its a pleasure to have watched it and I’m loving the new female Dr Who, Jodie Whittaker.

At Cheddleton today

We went to Cheddleton today, a little village in the Staffordshire moorlands near to Leek. Cheddleton Station is part of a preserved railway called the Churnet Valley line. It runs from Leek brook junction, through Cheddleton and on through various tiny stations to Froghall.

The railway society run several special days throughout the year and this weekend was world war 2 themed. A singer was singing old 30s and 40s songs. She was dressed in a uniform with badges saying ENSA on them which was the group that used to entertain the troops .

I had forgotten my phone so ended  up doing some drawings on a sheet of A4 paper folded into quarters. I only had an old black felt pen with me  but that helped with the shading. I was able to draw one of the trains standing in the station (about 10 minute sketch) and one if the singer (15 minute sketch) . As I drew the pictures I joked that I might have been arrested as a possible spy during the war. After all who would want to draw train and railway details ? It is odd how paranoid the world seems to be these days and how simple activities can make you think about things. I wish I had taken some photos to show the reality of the place, with the trains and the classic cars that were there. There was also a large gun like a howitzer being carried on one of the trains.

We went for lunch at the School house tea rooms at Cheddleton and had a lovely meal. It was a good afternoon out.
