Diameter?

How do you work out the radius of a satellite dish when all you know is its diameter? That was the strange question I tried to answer on twitter last night.

First of all I had to remember my school girl maths from fifty years ago.

I remembered the diameter if found with the formula 2 pi r. Where pi is 22/7. I couldn’t remember the decimal version and I wasn’t using a calculator so I divided 7 into 22 and got 3.142. Then r is the radius, which is half of 70=35.

So then I had to multiply (on paper again) 2 Xx 3.142= 6.284. And multiply that by 35. As my multiplication is not good I added 3 lots of 62.84 together = 188.52, then added 6.284 together five times = 31.41 (yes it’s long winded but accurate). Add the two figures together and you get 219.93.

I don’t know BODMAS or PODMAS or whatever they are called. But I actually got it right. Not to bad for an oldie!

PS the formula for area is pi r squared. Not going there!

Apparently Goldfish CAN count.

Sorry not to have a photo of a goldfish! Having a chat with hubby this morning, and he’d read an article that goldfish can count. It makes me realise how much we don’t know about the animal kingdom. How intelligent animals are. I’ve been watching a TV programme by Chris Packham about animal genius. Birds such as the Corvid family using tools, also otters and primates. So many animals that we are not aware of. We must continue to pay attention to these things. Learning how intelligent life is not just the domain of humans. For too long we have regarded ourselves as top of a pyramid of animals, as superior. We need to be more caring and take on the responsibility to look after them, not persecute them. But not because goldfish can count, but because whether they can or not, we need to look after our home, our planet.

X2…

If one person passes on flu to 1.3new people it takes a while to spread, but with Corona virus it spreads to 2 people on average.

I decided to multiply 1 x2and see what happened. I realised after I got to eight billion that I was wrong, you would have to add 1+2+4+8+16+32+64 to get the true figure. So instead of getting to over 8 billion in 34 days it would take a lot less time.

So I don’t want to worry you, but please wash your hands.
