I don’t!

What brands do you associate with?

Brands? You can keep them. Expensive, exclusive, snobbish, wasteful, fashion victims.

I have never really bought brands, especially clothes. I don’t feel they mean anything to me. I can see how expensive brands exclude the majority. Or people spend money they can’t afford to go one better than their neighbours.

In some ways I can see the manufacturer Ford’s argument that you could have any colour of car so long as it was black! Now people want exclusive sports cars, or utility vehicles. But to me as long as a car gets me from A to B safely and at no great cost? I’m happy. It can be shabby, growing moss on the bodywork. As long as I can use it for transport that’s fine.

Imagine the savings? You don’t have to spend too much to get something decent. If I can I will try and choose reliability and boring mundanity over glitzy, showy brands. And with those characteristics you can have something that is less likely to get stolen. It makes life easier not to bother with brands.

Car is home!

I have got my car back! Finally after a week of waiting for it I can breathe a sigh of relief. But among all of the hassle I realise how anti public transport I am. I think it’s because I’ve used buses and taxis in the past, and I don’t know the routes or timings for the buses, and often when I’ve ordered a taxi it hasn’t turned up. One time I had to walk home from hospital because there were non available. Also since the pandemic I try to avoid groups of people, so buses worry me.

Having a car is a freedom and a curse. I walk less and don’t cycle anymore because I have one. I don’t know what to do if we have to get rid of it. The car is very old and it’s like an old pair of shoes, if it needs repairing I have to pay out because I can’t afford to replace it with another (second hand) one. But at least by keeping it we are not wasting new resources.

14 years bad luck?

Temporary fix…. The mirror we bought at the spares shop wasn’t the right size. Hubby held it while I went to get some insulation tape. Then as I tried to tape the mirror in place… SMASH! He dropped it and it cracked. Luckily we were still at the shop so I bought another one. I’ve booked the car in the garage so I’ve decided just to tape the new broken mirror over the old one. I’ve used the tape over and inside the drivers door so it supports the weight. I can see behind me now and I always use all my mirrors so I should be OK till tomorrow….

Broken wing mirror.

I got in the car last night to get some cat food. It was only when I got to the top of the hill and tried to check my drivers wing mirror I realised I couldn’t see behind me. I pulled over and saw that the mirror was hanging off. I couldn’t see the glass so drove home….

The mirror was on the road but broken…it doesn’t help that I have to park on the road, its not the first time it’s been hit. Seven years bad luck?

I will have to try and get it fixed, but last night I taped everything back together as well as I could. I won’t claim on our insurance because the car is very old and it might be impossible to get the parts. My neighbours car was written off because it was slightly damaged. I can’t afford to lose it and replace it, I don’t have the money.

Sorry to moan about this. Its worth poking on YouTube for fixes. My mirror is a bit too damaged to do them and I don’t have the skills…

Cold day

Wet and cold today. The sort of day to wear layers to keep warm. Gas prices are at an all time high and the cost to consumers is ser to rise.

Last night I slept on the settee again because of my leg, and despite trying to keep warm with a housecoat and a dressing gown on, I ended up putting a pair of trousers on! I also used a bath sheet to go over the top of me. I miss my warm duvet. I’m not putting the heating on until we get temperatures below 0°. Celsius.
