Flaming torches

When I dropped my hubby off at Penkhull it was amazing to see three or four hundred people crowded on either side of the road getting ready to set off on the Wassail. There were people carrying lit flaming torches which Sent sparks up into the windy air. I let hubby out of the car next to the Domesday Morris dancers, they were dressed in their costumes with fairy lights wrapped around their hats. The sun was about to set and I wished I was going with them down the hill to the ancient apple tree to beat its boughs so that it will be fruitful in autumn. They would be walking around some of the boundaries of the village and stopping off to dance on the church green then calling in at the local pubs and the choir I am with would be singing Wassail songs outside them. Unfortunately I missed all of that. But I went home and had a rest instead.

Trip to World museum Liverpool

Back in 2018, when crowds were allowed, we went to see the terracotta army travelling exhibition at Liverpool. While I was there I did a series of sketches. This is a favourite. Not the warriors but a sculpted chariot or carriage pulled by four ponies. I think it’s good to draw as well as taking photos. You get a different perspective… Literally!

Memory of a steam fair

About 2018, hubby and I visited a steam fair at Chelford near Jodrell Bank in Cheshire.

It wad a lovely day out. Lots of country market stalls selling everything from honey to shoes. Lots of mechanical stuff for farmers and people who like to ‘tinker’.

The photo is of a miniature train that was running alongside the main exhibition ring of the fair. We took a short ride on it.

Tractors and steam engines were being displayed. And around the ring were steam gallopers and traction engines, plus food stalls.

Wouldn’t be allowed now!

Theatre

Tragedy and comedy, a small drawing I did.

One thing I miss at the moment is going out to the theatre. It wasn’t something we did frequently but I did enjoy going three or four times a year.

We have a few local theatres. The Regent theatre, the New Victoria theatre, and the Rep. We went out to see Warhorse last year, that was fantastic. I’ve also seen waiting for Godot years ago, the Scottish play and others by Shakespeare.

Over the years we have seen many more productions, including musical evenings, and also live casts of plays at the local cinema. The thought now of sitting with hundreds of people feels frightening. How the world can change…..
