Red sunsets due

I was watching the weather forecast and the smoke from the forest fires in Canada has risen in the atmosphere and had been carried by the jet stream up across the Atlantic and towards the UK. The smoke particles are not low enough to cause breathing problems, but they are in the right place to scatter the light more at sunrise and sunset. This should result in brighter red and orange skies in the morning and evenings.

A similar phenomenon happened when Krakatoa erupted in the 19th Century. Then the volcanic dust that was swept into the sky caused changes in the evening light and blue moons being reported. We have to realise how interconnected the world is.

Forest fires.

The world watches as forests burn. In the Amazon, around the Mediterranean. In the North where the temperatures have soared.

We have been told by scientists and young adults alike, but many turn their backs to the truth. Climate crisis deniers are like ancient Nero, fiddling while Rome burned.

We must take action now. Reduce our carbon footprints. Even in small ways we can help. One degree less on the thermostat, walking instead of driving, house insulation and double glazing. Not much in scheme of things, better than nothing. Now we are used to Zoom why not meet on line? Ask the important questions. Do we need the car today, can you replace things when they wear out with second hand, pre loved items. There are so many people on the Earth, let’s be fair, share, and waste less.

Trees are lungs

We breathe in breathe out…. Carbon Dioxide. But trees and plants breathe out oxygen after taking in carbon dioxide. Why? Because they photosynthesise. They turn gas and water into food and grow. Oxygen is a biproduct.

Looking at a tree in winter you can almost see the bronchial tubes of lungs, the alveoli would be the leaves in summer.

That’s why we need to plant trees not cut them down. In the Amazon and other rainforest millions have been cut down. All over the world trees and plants are burning, either at the hands of humans or through fires caused by global warming.

We must change this. We must care. Even my government is cutting down woods and forests for stupid fast railways and roads.

Not in my name is the phrase isn’t it?

Wild fires

Over the last few weeks there have been various articles on the TV about fires burning out of control all over the world. Apparently there are fires in the Russia in Brazil and a friend tells me in Australia too.

The Brazilian ones are being caused in the main by farmers trying to free up land for farming cattle. In other places forests are removed to grow Soya and orangutans are losing their homes.

What the hell is going on? Global warming means we need to reduce the temperature. Trees and forests help absorb CO2 which is a major factor in global warming. The fires can be seen from space.

So why allow it to go on? Deliberate slash and burn must stop. We need to restore what we can and replant more trees.

I guess people with real money could help, but it might come down to someone who is like Johnny Appleseed who sowed apple pips and grew a forest? (I’m not sure he actually existed but I like the idea).

By the way does anyone want a walnut sapling? I have a couple that need good homes.
