I tried my hand as (bad) sculpting yesterday. I think because I bodged this together there might be trapped air and I am a bit worried this might explode or the tail or front legs fall off in the kiln. I did hollow it out to make that mess likely, and using that extra bit of clay I made a pinch pot in the shape of a flower. I expect both pieces to shrink when they are biscuit fired and then I might glaze them. Anyway it’s a bit different to painting. X
We visited Etruria Industrial museum today. This was in the colour room in the flint mill. The room had been set up for a bit of play with clay. I tried to make a pinch pot but it wasn’t very good. The cat in the window is a paper cut out, the lady doing the workshop had a witches hat.
The industrial museum is run by volunteers and doesn’t get a lot of funding. It would be good to know it will be secure in the future, but who knows what will happen in then?
Sitting at the exhibition yesterday I was starting to get bored. There was some clay available and as I didn’t feel like actually throwing a pot I decided to do a pinch pot instead.
What is a pinch pot? You just hollow out a small lump of clay then pinch it so it gets thinner and thinner walls. I didn’t use any water, so as I stretched and pinched the pot it started to split and crack. I used a broken pencil to make tiny indentations all over the surface, making larger dents around the rim.
It turned into an irregular, ugly little pot. But I might get it fired and glaze it with oxides. I might do more to go with it.
