Migraine

Had a ‘retinal migraine’ last night, an unnerving experience. I was reading subtitles on TV when they started to go blurry, then the edge of my vision started to sparkle and look jagged, hard to explain, so I’ve tried to draw it. Apparently according to my optician it’s not unusual, I should have covered one eye then the other. If it happens in both it’s an effect in my brain. It cleared up after 20 mins. (if just in one eye, then it may be a problem in one of my eyes).

      1. The aura is the first thing, then I’m exhausted for another day. I don’t have a lot of pain (knock on wood). I’ve (like you have) learned about how to “manage” them so they don’t (completely) manage me. I have learned they are often related to a sudden fall in air pressure. Wacky air pressure happens often where I live. I’ve also learned that a shot of serious coffee helps if I get it soon enough. I keep little cans of double espresso in my fridge. I can’t take NSAIDs so I have to rock it out. I read a bit in your blog and I admire your determination and acceptance. Beautiful!

  1. It sounds like ‘typical’ migraine with visual aura… doesn’t stop it from feeling very scary though! Visual aura but no brain-pain, is apparently less common, and I think tends to commence later in life (and I think can be a perimenopausal/menopausal hormonal thing too). Hope you’re feeling better today! Linda xx

  2. Visual auras aren’t much fun. I’ve only ever experienced two of them (both seem to have been brought on by air conditioning combined with stress).

The first started off as zig-zags that appeared on the top of a lady’s pair of glasses of the person I was testing (I am an optometrist) before spreading over my vision.

The second started with my optical assistant’s eye appearing to be much further down their face than normal. I knew their eye displacement couldn’t be anything other than my perception! But that too proceeded to be a full visual obscuration.

I’d have been terrified, both times, if it wasn’t for me asking every patient about visual disturbances and knowing potential causes!

I hope your migraines are better! They don’t sound like much fun at all!
