The repetition of other people’s words or sounds is echolalia. When the toddler you babysit repeats everything you say, over and over again, you can call it “annoying,” or you can call it echolalia..
I looked this up because a friend would keep repeating what I said, what I said. I did not know why, know why…..
Apparently it’s something to do with psychiatric disorders or autism. I would not say my friend suffered from either of these. Perhaps it was a habit? I don’t know. It was incredibly annoying until I realised it was normal for my friend and learned to accept it.
I find myself doing that when I’m tried (probably die to the autism). I think the worst time I ever did it was in a full staff meeting at school near the end of term. I found myself repeating the last word the Head Teacher said. Worse still it happened twice. Obviously I apologised (and went bright red in embarrassment) but sadly you can’t un-say things!

It’s not a terrible thing though. It must be awful to have turettes syndrome. Xx

Yeah, tourettes is much worse, especially the physical tics. I worked with a young adult with this – it was so isolating for him because he would lash out, completely unintentionally, so his peer group kept away from him.

The human brain is a mysterious thing. I hope he was OK.

He was OK in school but I don’t know what happened to him after that.
