I’ve been watching a painting programme late at night with an artist called Bob Ross I think. He does half hour programmes (think they were done in the 1980’s?). He cheerfully shows you how to do landscapes. He does a painting in half an hour. Showing how to paint layers to build up depth and distance. Each layer adds to the image. I’m not keen on his art, its very formulaic, but it’s interesting. I decided to paint along with him last night. It’s a very small canvas but I couldn’t keep up! At least I got a vague result.

Well done Christine, your painting is great xx

He’s very quick! I missed bits out and need better brushes. His picture was done mostly with palette knife, I would have had to use a matchstick as the canvas is only matchbox sized. To be honest it gave me a greater respect for what he does. X

That’s pretty good! I used to try and paint with him, he makes it look a lot easier than it is! But I did learn a lot by watching him when I was a kid!

Thanks, it would have helped if I’d used decent brushes

We recorded (and are STILL recording) the ‘Joy of Painting’ series during lockdown 1, and have finally got round to watching this programme early on in lockdown 2. We enjoyed your take on Bob Ross’s painting – recogisably the same scene, also recognisably different – and your trees are excellent. Well done on keeping up, this painting had a lot in it and Bob seemed a bit rushed at times.

Yes he has skills I’m impressed with. I think painting in oils probably helps. I tried acrylics and it dried too fast x
