Treat others…

Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

… As you would treat yourself .

The world needs balance, fairness, care.

Be considerate of others, it’s something I’ve always thought was a good principle to try and stick to. Before you do something that might affect others, think of the consequences. I think the people in the world could try and be more helpful to each other. For instance 8 men (billionaires) own as much as 3.6 BILLION People. That’s about half the world’s population. Isn’t it about time that things were shared more fairly? I’m not saying everyone could be equal, but perhaps instead of avoiding tax, the richest in society could pay a fair amount.

Make tax avoidance illegal

If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

Many people use loopholes in the law to avoid paying taxes. By moving their funds offshore for instance or using accountants to hide their money, and filing tax returns with lots of expenses included so their tax charge is reduced. In this way poorer people on income tax, paying as they earn, can pay a higher proportion of their income in taxes than those who are richer than them.

Avoidance is legal, evasion is not. Quote:

Tax avoidance is the legitimate exploitation of tax loopholes to reduce the individual or business’ tax liability whereas tax evasion is the illegal evasion of taxes properly due.

So why do we allow this? Especially the most egregious examples of avoidance? Yes, there should be legitimate reasons to cover normal expenses, but surely we could cut down on loopholes. Maybe every country could have the same tax rates, so no one can get away with it. I understand some countries offer lower taxes to increase their income, but there might be other ways of doing this. I think it would be difficult but not impossible?

It can’t be right that about 80 men have more wealth when its added up than half the world’s population. In other words 80 people have about the same as 4,000,000,000 people! Once you look at it that way it’s not really fair is it?

Cost….

My friend is offering a beautiful print for sale and as a limited edition (not the image here, it has similar colours). I would love it, and it’s at a fair price for an artist to charge. But all I could think was, car tax and other bills are due in January. I have to realise I cannot afford it. Now I feel guilty for just enquiring.

I realise I don’t charge enough for my art. I have this strange idea that I want my art to go to a good home, so I undersell, swap art, or offer ways people can pay in installments. But I’m also doing other artists a disservice. If I charge less, how can they charge more? I think it might be my upbringing. Having a belief in myself? I guess it’s just how I am.

Ordering online

I don’t usually buy things over the Internet. But a couple of weeks ago I saw an advert for a company who were closing because of the pandemic. I felt sorry for them so ordered a few things. Now I have no idea when they will arrive, I’m just not very observant about these things. I think that I should be OK because my payment was covered by insurance.

But now I’ve heard that I may have to pay tax when the items arrive. Since Brexit there is VAT or tarrifs to pay because we have left Europe! I might not bother to buy things on line again.
