An old prompt, I chose mathematics

What’s something most people don’t understand?

I’ve been wondering what to write for this prompt, and I realise that apart from basic addition (arithmetic) people struggle with calculations and formulas.

I was dropped down into the CSE group when I did maths at school. In the end that did me a favour. The exam was like a normal lesson and I got an o level pass.

I just about understood quadratic equations but never liked having to go through the stages of the calculations. I could follow logarithms, but never did calculus. My understanding of sine, co-sine and tangents left something to be desired.

But at least I understood numbers. There is something like dyslexia that some people have, it’s called dyscalculia. As people become aware of it, it might explain why they struggle.

Happy Pi Day

Have a happy Pi day. 22 over 7. Or 3.141592…. ? I’m not sure. An important mathematical concept that most people represent with a slice of Pie. Pi is the 16th letter of the Greek Alphabet. Pi is an infinite and irrational number I think? One episode of Star Trek had an out of control computer set to calculate the figure and was defeated because it was an impossible task. I just did a doodle based on the letter. Not exactly exciting sorry x

Through the arched window

Arches are strong. Arches support weight because pressure is pushing inwards towards a central point. They have a keystone that holds everything together. I wish I knew the mathematics that explained this. But it is something amazing when you see arches in churches or castles or other religious or secular places supporting the rooves of buildings. They can be so elegant and flimsy looking but they have innate strength. All due to forces, and geometry.
